Generac 20,000kW Standby generator doesn't start shows message STOP ALARM OVERCRANKED

Overcrank means that it tried to start and couldn't. It will go through 5 crank cycles and then stop with this alarm. Switch to off, hit enter to clear fault and then try to start in manual. Check to make sure you have fuel and pressure is 11 to 14 in WC.

I have a natural gas generac 8kw it was running fine now it will not run found that out after the last power outage pull the plug looks good found that it will not spark at the plug

How old is it???? Does it have a read out that tells you what's wrong?????When is the last time you did a maintaince tune up on it???? Mine is fueled by propane and I changed the oil and plugs and it's been fine since....Sometimes it's the starter/ignition..I would do a complete tuneup first, then clear codes, then try starting it up manually....If that works put it back on auto..Good Luck

My standby generator is just cranking but wont turn all the way

If it was installed only five months ago, it should still be under warranty. Call Home Depot and have them send out a repair person.

Generac 40kw single phase generator starter engages after 30sec of running

For the over voltage there is an adjustment on the control board.Should be tested with a load something plugged in.The hertz might just come on when under load and adjusted too.If you need more give a model number and whether it is 13kw or 40kw.

Generac Guardian 12 KW Model 04456-2 shuts down on overspeed in cold weather

Leigh, See my 5/22/12 comments on my "overspeed fault" problem resolution [Generac 43903 standby Generator overspeed indicator on starting] . If it only runs for a few seconds and then quits, you may have a similar condition to the one my unit had. A good technician should be able to diagnose the problem and determine if you have a similar failure to the one I had, or one of the other causes suggested by RSG000.

well I have a special flasher unit but I believe you can put 12 volts to the brushes while it's running. That should do it.

I have a 12kw

These type of gens have a low oil shutoff. Check the oil. Always have spare spark plugs, a cheap fix. My gen always wanted a new plug every year. Look to see if it has a fuel filter.

Starts but dies, new carb,

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

With a new carb and the symptom of it starts and dies this sounds like one of the generator safety circuits is tripping the unit off line.

Safety circuits are.
1. Low Oil Pressure
2. High coolant temp
4. Under / over voltage
5. Under / over Frequency
5. Low Battery
Any one of these being activated shuts the unit down via the control board.

If you respond with a model number I will dig up the manual.

I have a 15 kw unit. It starts up fine and runs,

Starting fine and then surging is a result of debris in the carb float bowl in most cases. Remove the float bowl and cler out the debris or water. Also.... a clogged fuel filter can cause this same symptom as can a bad fuel pump (if equipped.) Lastly check inside the feul tank looking at the tank port to carb main fuel line for obstructions.

Check fuel flow to the carb at the carb connection. It should pass about 1 cup of fuel in less than 10 seconds. If it does not do this you have fuel supplu issues. If it does do this... for sure there is debris in the float bowl. Make sure to clean the bowl nut (if equipped.) The surging is causing voltage or frequency faults as the engine speed is not constant. (Normal for the unit to shut down when this happens)

If you have a hand held propane torch... you can use it unlighted to test for vacuum leaks with the engine running. The engine will speed up where ever there is a leak. Just barely open the torch flame control valve but do not light it. The engine should speed up as you pass near the actual air intake but no where else. I do not at this time think you have a vacuum leak. I think you have a fuel management problem via a dirty float bowl or restricted fuel supply.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

DO YOU RCOMMEND A TIME

If the generator is installed correctly and it is running within it's continuous rated capacity, it can run indefinitely. The main thing is operating temperature. Just like a car engine, once it comes up to normal operating temperature it's cooling system should be able to keep it from overheating. But unlike a car, where the manufacturer has complete control over the installation, a standby generator could possibly be installed in a way that inhibits proper cooling. However, this is very unlikely if the unit was professionally installed. And even if it did overheat, the unit should be able to trip it's own breakers or shut itself down anyway. The only other consideration is fuel consumption. A standby generator is not an economical way to get your electricity. If it runs for several days or weeks you are going to notice the fuel bill. I hope you found this helpful.
