Hold the button on the remote down for about 8 seconds, this should give you the audiable alrm, if not then you may have a fault with the hood/bonnet switch, these often jam up and so the car thinks someone is trying to steal it very common fault on the 3 series. sounds silly but take a look at the pin switch on the slam panel push it in out etc see how it feels.
Get back to me if that does not cure it.

Dave, You may want to have your Anti-theft System checked. I had the same problem with my car and after a few parts and many dollars later. I found out it was the Anti-theft system that was causing the car not to start. I have not had any more problems once I have it removed. I hope this helps Good Luck.

hi i had the same problem,
the problem is that there is a thick wire in your boot and when the airbag deplode themselves at impact the fuse conected to the wire blows and cuts the engine out for safety purposes,
the part of the wire is expensive(200-300£)
a cheaper way is to get a good aut electrician to rewire it then it will start

2008 328i battery change warning
Make sure you hook a battery charger to the posts under the hood before you change out your battery. Otherwise the car loses all data, has to be flashed, recoded for the new aftermarket battery if that's what you bought and re-registered to the car. Believe me, it's much cheaper just to have the dealer install a new one. This is not all BMW's but some of them require this attention.
