This error is triggered if the scanner is not able to determine the end stop for the scanner. Likely an electronic failure but sometimes caused by too much friction in the scanner mechanism and the motor errors out trying to move the scanner.

That is most likely damage to the scanner itself, you can power it on with the lid up and watch the scanner move back and forth, if it hangs or jitters it is pretty much not worth it to repair unless you are good with taking things apart and re assembling. Sometimes cleaning can help but the labor alone is going to cost you the same as buying a new printer.
