I have a Yamaha XLT 1200 that sounds great out of
Joseph, I am having the same problem. Although I do not yet have it solved, here are some things that have been recommended to me by friends and shops:
1) For me the water was coming out the front water vent holes (left and right side toward front of hull) but water was hot, not cool when I idled for long periods of time or towed tubers/skiers. The exhaust alarm for me went off about 15 mins also when idling but I could run it wide open for 20 without issue.
2) The shop recommended I flush the system to eliminate any foreign objects in the system. After removing all connections and blowing out everything going to the jet plate I flushed the system in my driveway for at least 15 mins without warm water or an exhaust alarm, but the nex ttime I put it into the water it happened again.
3) After talking further with a tech. he stated that it could be the catalytic converter is broken or clogged. Higher RPM it forces enough water past it for cooling and enough enought pressure from the exhaust thru the converter so it doesn't develop the heat issue. This logic seems to hold true.
I haven't yet tried to pull out the converter and check it for defects but that is my next option.
BTW, converters (like anything) aren't cheap! He stated they DO have a bypass kit which removes the converter and puts in a straight pipe and sensor bypass for about $200.
Let me know what you come up with if you find anything too!

When replacing battery in yamaha GP1200 when attach negative cable the unit seems as wants to turn over the engine while the unit is off and no key in place.. also notice in seconds that the battery terminal on negative side started smoking..actually melt the new battery terminal on negative side..yes, postive was connected to positive. Any ideas what why this would take place??
