Kenmore 54501 Dehumidifier - Page 9 Questions & Answers
Of our three 54501 Kenmore dehumidifiers, none
Keep
in mind, that a dehumidifier only draws humidity from the air, if the
level of humidity is higher than what the controls are set on. For instance, if you have the dehumidifier set on 65 to 70%, that's a high level of humidity to maintain in a house. If you have it set for 35 or 45%, that's a low level of humidity to maintain in a house. Which, generally is what you want to maintain in the hot, humid summer months. I find it uncanny, that all 3 units are not collecting any water. So, it may simply be the case, that the humidity level on each unit is improperly set.
Also, a dirty air intake filter makes the unit strain to
keep up and can't take in moisture as it should. So, if you haven't
cleaned the filters on a regular basis, not is the time to do so. And
while your at it, clean the cooling coils too.
The easiest and
best way to test a dehumidifier at home, to see if it's working
properly. Is to place it in the bathroom and turn the shower ON and
don't operate the bathroom's exhaust fan. Set the humidity level low
(45%), turn the unit ON and close the door when you leave. Wait 30 to 40
minutes and check the water collection bucket. If there's water in it,
it's working as it should.

I have a kenmore dehumidifier
My first thought is that there's not enough moisture/humidity in the air, for the setting you have the humidifier set on. The higher the setting or percentage (i.e. 60%) means that the level you want to maintain. Which may be find in the cod winter months. In the Hot summer months, you want as low a level of humidity as possible (i.e. 45%).
My second thought is that the air intake filter and the coolant coils need cleaning, since it has been used in 2 years. It's just sat around gathering dust and spiders.
And finally, the collection bucket, may not be inserted properly and when the unit starts up the vibration dislodges the bucket just enough, so that it's not making contact with the safety switch. Sometimes when this happens, the Full light indicator will come ON, even if the bucket is empty.
Hope this helps you to start troubleshooting the problem. Please let me know.
How can I get a
Since it's a Kenmore (actually it was made by Fedders), you can get download the manual at Sear Parts Central.
When it runs at 35% no problem. Runs constant.
Sounds like it's working fine. If you've been operating it at 35% it's lower the humidity significantly. If you're turning the humidity level up, there's just not enough humidity for it to sense. So, it turns OFF.
It will eventually come back ON, when the humidity level rises to above the percentage you have it set on.
Hope this helped you. Please let me know.

I have one of your dehumidifiers and it turns on
If you haven't clean the air intake filter since you've had it. More than likely that's the problem. A dirty filter makes the dehumidifier strain to take in the moist air and it just can't keep up.
If you don't have your Owners Manual to guide you through the process. You can download one online, from Sears Parts Central.
Hope this helped you to solve the problem.
The dehumidifier wants to run...it
you would also be testing to assure that power is going to the fan as well with a multimeter the wiring to the fan should come from the control if you have any further questions message me back I await your reply Thanks again Rick
Unit turns on for about a few seconds and shuts
Possibly., the unit turning ON vibrates the bucket in such a way, that it loses contact with the safety switch and the unit shuts OFF. If the dehumidifier is not sitting level, it would cause the bucket to shake more than usual. In addition, if you haven't cleaned the filter recently, I would suggest that you do that. A dirty or clogged filter causes the unit to struggle and if it is to much to handle, it will cause it to shut OFF. Before you attempt remove the filter, turn OFF the Master ON/OFF Switch and Unplug the unit. Be sure you do it in the order I listed.
Hope this helps you further to troubleshoot and solve the problem.
My Kenmore Dehumidifier Model no.
The unit may need to be reset. To do this turn OFF the Master ON/OFF Switch. Unplug the unit from the outlet and wait 12 - 15 minutes. Plug the unit back in and turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to ON. Set your controls as you normally do and if the unit did reset itself, it should work properly. One other thing to take note off, ... Does the unit feel or appear to be overheating? If so, it may need a recharge of refrigerant gas.
Hope this helps you to solve the problem.
The humidifier runs but doe snot collect water.
Most of the time this is based on the humidity level in your home and what you have set the humidifier to remove. However, if the filter is dirty or clogged, the unit struggles to dehumidify the area. Removing the filter and cleaning it, may solve the problem. And while you're at it, check the drain hole or tube, that drains into the bucket for clogs. You will have to remove the bucket to do this. Even though you may not be able to see a clog, it may be there none the less. Using an 18" long, plastic Zip Tie that will fit into the hole or tubing is a good way to clear it out. Just do it gingerly and work it past the curve in the tubing. When you pull it back out, be prepared for water to follow it. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a wire coat hanger to clear the clog. Also, before attempting any of the above, turn the Master On/Off Switch to Off and unplug the unit from the wall outlet.
Hope this helps you solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks!
Ice forming on top of unit between the front panel
The filter is clogged on the unit. Unplug the unit and let it defrost. You may want to put some towels or old newspaper under it to absorb any possible drippings. Once the unit has completely thawed, remove the filter and clean it. If it's an aluminum mesh filter, you can back flush it and then wash it with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly and let dry completely or use a blow drier to speed up the drying process.
Hope this solves your problem.
What is the right temperature setting when the
You can't control the temperature setting but you can control the humidity level. I would start somewhere between 35 and 40%- making sure to empty the dehumidifier promptly when full. 40% humidity will prevent mold and mildew growth- and that musty smell- but keep the room from becoming too dry.
