I'm not familiar with that model number but if it is rubber with fingers sticking up then a large flat screwdriver under it and lever it up, bending it a little from 2 different sides and you should then be able to unscrew it (left hand thread I think) with your fingers. Failing that put in extra effort and wreck it off, the threaded part is aluminum and not strong enough to cause any damage to the motor shaft. If the coupling is internal splines in a hole ask me another question.

The piece that you need is referred to as the coupler. The coupler is a breakway part that is designed to shear and/or wear down in the event that the blender is overloaded. This is to avoid damage to the motor.

The jar assembly for the KSB540 is part W10503762. this is for the 48oz jar assembly. Henzee, the part you are looking for is called the KitchenAid blender drive coupling. It is the little black rubber piece ontop of the motor base that looks like a crown with six teeth on top. The motor spins this piece which them spins the blades. It is a very common replacement part for the KSB5 blenders made by KitchenAid. The part number you are looking for is 9704230, i am not aware of any places in Africa that sell the part but you can probably find someone in the USA that can ship it to Africa. Drill a hole in the rim flange at the top. Engage a screwdriver in the new hole and whack it with a heavy hammer. You are trying to spin the coupling in the same direction it turns when the motor runs. This solution ALWAYS works if you do it right.

Someone else suggested a link that explains exactly how to unthread the old coupling... and it works. It took me about 90 seconds to fix my blender. But in case that link is dead, here's a summary:

(1) Note that the coupling (the round part with teeth) is threaded to the blender motor in reverse to a standard threading. So it screws off just like a bottle top, but in a clockwise direction.

(2) place the blender base on a tabletop, facing you. You should probably unplug it.

(3) take a punch or a flathead screwdriver, and place it against one of the coupling teeth that is furtherest away from you.

(4) strike the back of the screwdriver with a small hammer or maillot. The result will spin coupling clockwise. It may take several tries, but the coupling will eventually spin clockwise faster than the motor, and it will begin to unthread.

(5) unscrew the old coupling, and screw the new coupling into place (counterclockwise). Note that the new coupling will tighten itself every time you use your blender, so no need to worry about tightening it too much.

(6) Make a smoothie to celebrate your success!

This is a most unusual case, under the circumstances I would contact KitchenAid for a solution, have you tried turning canister clockwise and anticlockwise, should unlock in "anticlockwise position" if no luck contact the manufacture.

If you have a Kitchenaid Blender (model KSB50B3 or similar) and the rubber teeth on the coupling (that spikey rubber thing on top of the base) broke off (see picture), here is how you can fix it yourself! The Task: The coupling is screwed onto a vertical shaft like a button mushroom. The shaft is round with two flat sides. You need to find an U-shaped thing [such as a wrench] to secure the shaft and loosen the coupling by turning it CLOCKWISE. What you need: 1. New coupling: Part number KA-9704230. Shouldn't be more than $6. I got mine at www.goodmans.net. Their shipping fee is very decent and the service is also good. 2. An U-shaped object: Some had success with household forks. That didn't work for me. Most successes came from the use of ignition wrenches. There's only about 1/4 of an inch between the coupling and the base, and these very thin wrenches can get in there. You will need size 5/16 or 9/32. I got mine at Sears. They come in a set and are not cheap!! The steps: 1. Rip the rubber cover off the coupling. There's a metal disc inside. 2. Secure the shaft with the wrench. 3. Grab the metal disc with a plier and quickly **** it CLOCKWISE. This is to overcome the inertia. 4. If not loosened repeat steps 2~3. 5. Screw new coupling on COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Now you are ready to make that smoothe or margarita or what have you again! Disclaimer: Kids, don't do this at home. the older glass jar blenders were sold as a complete ***'y too.
no separate parts were available. i'm sure the stainless jars are sold in the same way...complete.

Check the assembly of the impeller. I know this is obvious, but take some time and look at how it supposed to go together... I know I become complacent on this "easy" stuff, but that blender can go together more than one way, and it's best to step back, read the owner's manual, and try again. Answer back if you have continued problems.

When the lights are flashing, this does indicate that an electronic part has failed. This blender is no longer manufactured, so finding replacement parts for it may not come easily. Repair centers are available.

This error was probably not caused by replacing the coupler, but merely coincidence.
