I found a solution at kitchenaid.com. It says the bowl locks in the same direction as the rotating mixer moves, so slap the bowl with your hand a few times in the opposite direction, and then take vegetable oil and using a cotton swab line the groove of the bowl. Let it soak a bit, and then slap the bowl again and push it hard counterclockwise.

The gearbox grease has separated and is starting to move (slowly) onto the motor armature area through the front bearing. Replace the grease and since it will be apart, use a lot of cloth strips (NO Q-TIPS! TOO STRINGY - LEAVES A MESS) and alcohol to clean off the motor's armature, housing area and any place you see grease slung around. It's not going to be easy, but worth it. I will try to post pictures as I am doing this right now 12/28/17 to my wife's Kitchenaid for this exact reason. The first image is the gear side of the motor bearing, where the thinning grease is moving through. The second image is a shot of the armature of the motor where the brushes touch and will smoke if grease gets that far (it does). The third image is a cleaned out armature area (brushes removed and speed switch moved)The last is the pooled oil separated and sitting just behind the gear box (where will it go if you tilt the head back?)07667273-29b4-4c89-b9b3-12896c8ef14c.jpg20171228_163751-wafg2nvpw021bpnzetjjpo05-2-2.jpg20171228_165900-wafg2nvpw021bpnzetjjpo05-2-3.jpg20171228_173846-wafg2nvpw021bpnzetjjpo05-2-4.jpg

Kitchenaid Mixer will not lock

The locking mechanism on my kitchenaid mixer has stopped working. It will slide into the locked position, but when alittle upward pressure is applied (like when mixing dough) the head lifts and the switch slides into an unlocked position.

This sounds like an issue of beater to bowl adjustment, which can come out of alignment naturally over time and with use of the machine.

If the flat beater is striking the bottom of your bowl, this may cause the locking mechanism to loosen and may cause the mixing head to "bounce" during use.

Your Use and Care Guide will cover the "beater to bowl adjustment," which you can do at home in a few minutes with a flathead screwdriver.

Hope this helps!

vibrates and beater hits bottom of bowl

I've tried to tighten screws with no results

Try adjusting the height of the head by turning screw #36 counterclockwise a turn or so. This will raise the mixing head so the beaters no longer hit the bottom of the bowl. Refer to parts list:

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%208212010.pdf

If the pivot pin #18 is not centered and secured then center the pin and turn the mixer on its side to tighten screw #31 from underneath the mixer to secure the pivot pin.

It sounds like the speed control plate is not correctly adjusted. If you take the back cover off of the mixer (it is held in place with a screw at the top) and try adjusting the screws on the back plate you may be able to get the mixer to slow down.

You will notice two screws at the top of the speed control plate:
4893809-mz0mnwb1nd52ertzwibinpxu-3-0.jpg If you turn the top screws one quarter turn, both equally then test the mixer it should adjust the speed. Please make sure not to over tighten or loosen these screws as it can damage the speed control plate! You should not have to mess with any wires attached to the speed control plate or the bottom screw.

If you need more information please see the service manual here: http://ep.yimg.com/ty/cdn/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf
It will specifically go over how to trouble shoot the mixer and how to adjust the speed control plate.

Please let me know if you have any questions

It sounds like you removed the brushes, look in the hole and determine the orientation of the carbon brush( what you describe as magnet). Rotated 90 degrees may keep motor from running...

Hello Wittwer,

I understand that you are having a problem with your head locking in the down position. This is a common problem when the set screw that holds the latch in place is missing. On the right side of the base up next to where the lock is you will notice a whole that has threads make sure that the set screw is there if not you will need to order a new one. Here is a link to sears parts direct where you can purchase a new set screw they cost $4.62.

Those are the two Motor carbon Brushes. Without them, the motor
would not run at all. Sooner or later, they will become so worn out
that the mixer will stop running. And when it does, don't be alarmed.
You simply purchase new ones for it. To see what they look like,
Go on Ebay & search for Kitchenaid Motor Brush*. They are keyed so
there is only one proper way to insert them into the motor housing.
If either or both brushes do not make contact with the motor coils,
the motor will not run.

The speed control lever is either bent or the screw it pivots on has come loose. The only way to solve the problem properly is to take off the back cover, remove the white and the black wires from the speed control plate, remove it from the pedestal (1 screw up inside the pedestal to remove hinge pin), take the chrome drip ring off, remove the planetary and remove the 9 screws holding the 2 case halves together. That will allow you access to the lever and you will be able to tighten the screw or remove and bend the lever to give it more tension on the bumps in the housing that hold it in off or speed positions. This list is pretty much in order of how you do it.
