Sharp R-1480 Microwave Oven - Page 8 Questions & Answers
Microwave died while cooking
Sounds like the fuse has blown. There are some high voltage circuits that exists inside your microwave and you can potentially get hurt if you don't know what you are doing. Would recommend you have it serviced by a professional if you want it fixed, and you are not familar with high voltage components.
Sharp Carousel Model R-1440 won't stop running
It may be a sticking door switch (upper or lower, not the middle one) or the mount of one of those switches may be loose, broken or out of alignment.
See these files:

our Web site, we have a video available
showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5
minutes. Then you can get to the switches.
Or it may be a sticking relay on the control board.
We
regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by
mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so with a one-year
guarantee. If during this unwanted operation the oven lamp, internal cooling fan, and stirrer are all stuck on, but the turntable is not on moving and the oven is not actually cooking, then I would suspect relay RY1 on the control board is stuck.
That's what I suspect in your case.
Sharp R-1460A Timer counts down very rapidily and no heat
The
first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a
minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.
If that doesn't work,
leave it unplugged for maybe an hour.

Sharp Carousel Model R-1440 starts running when
This
is usually caused by either a bad door switch or a loose door switch
mount, which are pretty simple problems to fix.
See:
http://www.microwavedisplay.com/safety.txt
http://www.microwavedisplay.com/disassembly.txt
http://www.microwavedisplay.com/doorsw.txt
It will be either the very top or very bottom one, not the middle one.
Even though a door
switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.
Door switch
or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening
the
door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.
There are
plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and
onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.
The screws on these
mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be
activated properly.
Sometimes it's
a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just
out of position. This tab
can be hard to see, since it is under the
bottom edge of the switch.
If the switch mount is
broken, it's usually more economical and
safer to add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the
switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

Sharp R-1480 can't get it
The wall plate for this line of Sharp ovens (this uncludes R13xx - R15xx) is unlike most others. Rather than having two bend tabs at the bottom of the plate on which the unit rests, this design has two arms that protrude out from the wall. The microwave has two holes on the back that receive these arms. There are two screws at the front of the oven, behind the vent grille, that secure the oven to the arms.
It's a very easy system - actually easier than the more typical method - ONCE YOU KNOW ABOUT IT. Unfortunately, no one, including the FixYa "expert" was familiar with it, and spent over an hour of my time sending me in the wrong direction entirely. I won't be using FixYa again.
We have a Sharp R-1480
Have you removed all the duct work from above. There is a little rectangle metal piece that is on top of micro wave that is only 1 inch tall that might hold you up also.
Also on some sharp microwaves if you pull the front top grill off you will see 2 long screws that go from the front to the back of the microwave. Though-es screws attach to the mounting plate and help hold up the microwave. the two screws are on the left and right side about 1 inch down and 1.5 inches in from side. They are also flat head.
Good Luck
My Sharp problem is not with the product itself
Unfortunately, its not just Sharp. Many small appliance manufacturers are designing their products with an obsolete date as early as the warranty runs out. I see this all the time....even on very expensive items. For many mfgs, its cheaper to keep the manufacturing lines churning than to build an appliance to last....say 10 years. I do hope your experience with the new microwave is much better...and longer lasting. M
I opened the door on my sharp microwave and now it
It may be the latch head spring or the door open lever or button.
DOOR SPRING LATCH HEAD
HOOK
If
you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking
out of the door)
there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring
is off inside.
Normally the problem is
not the spring, but a broken
spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner
door panel.
If it's the door panel,
it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware
to fashion a new spring mount.
The door latch head
(hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.
y
ou have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo)
and then you'll see how it goes together.
Or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that
demonstrates how it's done.
DOOR OPENING BUTTON LEVER
What usually breaks is
the door open lever, but it may also be that the rear side of the door
open button has worn down too far to work.
On
a counter top model, the outer cover will need to be removed to
diagnose and repair this. On an over-the-range model, only the control
panel needs to be removed.
Please unplug the oven
first.
Once
it is apart, you'll be able to see how the door open button would press
against the door open lever, which would then lift up against the door
latch heads (hook-like projections on the door) and the door should
open.

Is in demo mode and I can't get out of it
I am familiar with TV sets being stuck in demo mode, but I've never heard of a microwave doing this. The fix for this on a TV is usually pushing a combination of buttons at the same time.
Call Sears or Best Buy and talk to an appliance salesman, or call a repair service. They surely wouldn't charge you anything for giving out this info.
