Thermostat reset trips continually

Here's an article detailing electric water heater repair, that will be helpful to you.Generally, when the reset button must be activated repeatedly, it indicates that one of the thermostats is not working properly. It is failing to sense the the actual temperature of the water in the tank. This may be caused by a number of different things with the more likely being a defective thermostat, water damaged thermostat, poor contact of the thermostat with the tank itself (this can be due to rust build up between the two or insufficient spring pressure holding the thermostat against the tank). You should do a visual inspection of the thermostats (with the power off!) to rule out the poor spring pressure, presence of rust or water and water damage to the thermostat. Repair sources of leaks if possible, remove thermostat(s) to clean the mating surfaces behind it and replace thermostats / parts that are weak or bent (in the case of the spring clip); wet or show evidence of earlier water damage. Once the thermostat(s) can properly detect the rising temperature of the water being heated by the heating element again, it will shut off power to the heating element when the water matches the temperature you have selected. When the thermostat is unable to accurately determine the water temperature due to poor contact with the tank, the thermostat will continue too allow power to flow to the heating element - causing the water temperature to rise significantly higher than the level selected. This is when the high temperature switch operates to prevent the water from being heated any more. Needless to say, scalding is a very real threat any time the heaters continue to heat the water to a temperature higher than 140 degrees.I hope this helps & good luck!
