The circuit breaker is tripping. It is on its own circuit and has worked fine up till now. Where should I look for problems
Check the voltage at the water heater. Sounds like the element is burnt out and is tripping the breaker.
If it is more then 5 years old I would check.install a new heating element.

Hi,
I have a GIANT 152ETE 40 gallons. I have been reseting it for a few days now as the water is getting very hot and it shuts down. I have replaced the top thermostat and the control advice at the bottom but it is still giving very very hot water and keep shutting down when the water has reached the high temp limit I guess.
I replaced the thermostat as the water was very hot in the tank, is it a problem? Should I have waited the water to cool down before?
What would be the next step?
Could it be one of the element?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
I have the smae problem but my element on top works fine it is the element on the bottem that does not go on so what is it that i have to change the element or the thermostat. on the bottom or the one on top. I have voltage on the top but none on the bottom element and are they suppose to go on the same time.

my hot water heater is making constant hissing noise even when the breaker is turned off. what could the problem?
You have a water leak under the house, but need to know if it's a gas heater or electric. check the Pop off valve on top of the tank it has a short handle and should go threw the floor pull up on the valve and let it sit back down, if it stops the high pressure pop off valve is leaking, you can buy it and replace it for 5 or 10 bucks, if that does not stop it look under the house. Also use a broom stick and put the round end at the wall and the other end near your ear and check the wall and floor for the noise the closer you get the louder the sound. Hope this helps. If you look under the house and see water you know you got a leak in the pipes or the tank itself.

I have a reliance 501 electric hot water heater and i cant find the reset button. Where is it located?
it is located on the thermostat. Take the cover off the side and you will see a little red button in the side of the themostat.

I have reliance 501 electric hot water heater, and currently have no hot water. Can't locate owners manual. What could be causing the problem.
There is an address near the end of this link to request manuals of reliance water heaters not listed. http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/lit/om.html
it is quite possible that your heater works on the same principle as one of the other models and just differs in capacity or power rating.

how to change a thermostat on reliance 606 hot water heater. water is getting too hot and there is no sediment build up. also water heater is only 4.5 years old.
I wrote a page for changing water heater thermostat.
The photos take you through step-by-step
I recommend replacing both upper and lower thermostats so it eliminates thermostats as possible cause if water heater keeps overheating.

The Reliance 606 manual shows your water heater uses generic upper and lower thermostats from hardware store.

Likely the thermostat will solve the problem:

Im trying to drain a 40 gallon water heater. How long should it take to drain the tank?
1) Open link below to see how to open clogged water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html
2) Water heater should take 20 minutes to drain.
3) Here's what to do.
Turn off heat source to water heater:
-electric: turn off circuit breaker
-gas: turn knob to pilot
Turn water off at shut-off valve located above tank on cold water line, or at main shut off.
Open bathtub spout on hot side to let air into tank.
4) When work is finished, close drain valve, turn water on, and wait until water if flowing full stream out of bathtub spout before turning power on to water heater.

Also take advantage of fixya phone service.
For a price, expert speaks with you over phone while you work on water heater or any do-it-yourself project.
Fixya is always less expensive than a service call.

reset button will not reset, stuck in place
Best solution would be to change out the thermostat it could cause problems if by chance you do get it to reset. Something goes wrong and it want trip the reset it could cause a fire, so the safe thing to do change it out.

I check the breaker box and it is on.
If it was working and recently stopped working, the heating element that heats the water probably went bad, no longer functioning. Check to make sure that there is or is not a reset button, and if there is, press and reset the heater. It's not difficult to remove the old heater element and replace it, but make sure the circuit breaker power to the water heater is off when you remove it. Take it to a water heating supply store, or large hardware store with the Brand and model number of your water heater (Reliance RELIANCE ELECTRIC WATER HEATER,model 606 ) to buy another one.
