Is it gas or electric ?

needs new thermostat(s) If the whole tank is heating( next time it trips, before using any hot water check the lower tank thru the lower element access(breaker off) If the lower tank is hot-you need a new lower thermostat. if just the upper part of the tank is heating -you need an upper thermostat.

You can change out relief valve to stop leaking. Sometimes they get debris stuck inside and will not close properly.

HelloIf you have a gas water heater and its a few years old and it has an electric fan for exhaust unplug the fan motor from out let and plug it in again this will rest your hot water computer and sensors. If the burner comes on which you will hear right away,, then it means your flame sensor needs cleaning its a 3 inch rod its infront of the door opening or water control below,,, slide cover off and one screw is holding the flame sensor rod. also look for a flashing red light down by the cntrols if it is flashing call a service man, in you need a computer board or module replaced if its a rental?,, its free. Please if this is Gas if you are not sure Call service man right away if its electric water heater Call for service likwise dont attempt repairs unless you need to rest your fuse on the electrical panel. If it was working and recently stopped working, the heating element that heats the water probably went bad, no longer functioning. Check to make sure that there is or is not a reset button, and if there is, press and reset the heater. It's not difficult to remove the old heater element and replace it, but make sure the circuit breaker power to the water heater is off when you remove it. Take it to a water heating supply store, or large hardware store with the Brand and model number of your water heater (Reliance RELIANCE ELECTRIC WATER HEATER,model 606 ) to buy another one.

Emergency steps:Turn electric power off.Release tank pressure by opening bathtub faucet on hot side.Turn off water supply to heater.You can turn water heater ON for short periods (1/2 hour) to make some hot water until repairs are made.It sounds like runaway heating caused by shorted element, possibly caused by leaking water. But I cannot tell for certain what the problem is. the heating element has most likely burned out (if its electric) if its gas then look to see if it is lightinng. if electric, the element is easy to replace and not very expensive.

It sounds like you have things pretty well covered. I would change reset and if it continues to trip breaker I would check wiring very carefully where it enters top of water heater. Check for any nicks or bare spots on wiring insulation. Other than that about all I can think of is to change breaker. Sometimes they do get weak and trip to easily. Hope this helps. Thanks
