Be sure to compare the removed belt to the new belt for length and width. Often belts get mis-packaged into the wrong container or otherwise mis-labeled. A belt that is even 1/4" longer will not provide the correct contact tension. Also be sure the pins that the carriage moves on are lubricated. Corrosion can keep the carriage from keeping tension on the belt as the carriage weight can not tension the belt. Hope this helps.

Be gentle, that shift cable is NLA (I know, I need one).It sounds as if the belt idler is not releasing. Take a look at the belt engage cable, Ref. check for spark is there a low oil shut off and the oil level is a little low ?
