STOP! Don't do anything more. Take the phone to a repair facility owned by your cellular service provider. They can resolve the problem. The problem (usually) is caused when either a new application or a program update has been downloaded on the phone - which has become unstable.
DO NOT attempt repairs yourself as it could make the problem worse. Just take your phone in for repairs from someone who is trained to correct the problem. It shouldn't take any more than 15 minutes to repair it.

Sorry to say, but your G1's LCD screen is broken. It will need to be replaced. The screen can be replaced. Or HTC can "repair" the phone for a small fee of $238.00(unless there is more broken than the LCD).

I know this might sound a little off but did you buy it from a store that ONLY sold vodafone or one that sold a number of networks?
I ask this as there may be a chance that you recieved a handset that was due for a different network by accident.
If not It is not unheard for a supplier to accidentally flash the wrong software ie, 02 of vodafone software onto a handset that was not due for that network.
If this is the case as soon as possible return to the place of purchase with full packaging and receipt and explain what the issue is. They should then hopefully exchange the handset if you recieved it in error

Do a hard reset:
Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC Wildfire as a result of this procedure. This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card. We recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding.
1. Turn the power off. If your HTC Wildfire is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
2. Hold the Volume Down button
3. Press and release the Power button
4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
6. Press and release the Power button
7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC Wildfire.
Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.
