a damaged reluctence ring or sensor. Driving the car with a broken reluctence ring is ok you lose ABS (obviously), and may lose cruise control and even the speedometer may stop for some strange reason

ABS sensor or most likely the speed sensor ring (reluctor ring) in one of the wheel cv joints, these are well known problem areas and give this sort of problem/indication. Sooner or later a fault code
