It starts fine, but when I put it in gear to go forward or reverse it dies. It also dies ... The engine on my riding mower will start and run while the clutch is pushed in.

If this is a 2-cycle engine, Ryboi are 50:1 check age of gas. Cannot be more than 30 days old. Make sure to use fresh gas w/synthetic 2-cycle oil @ 50:1 ratio (1 gal.) Gas to 2.5 oz. Oil). Do not use old or stale oil/gas mixture. Always use the proper oil/gas mix. If you do not, your engine will suffer rapid, permanent damage.

Check the oil level to see if it's over filled... Use Google for other options.

LUBRICANTS & FLUIDS:
Engine Oil Grade 1....SAE ..API*
Above -18C......10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-50
Above -7C......20W-40, 20W-50

CAPACITIES:
Engine, without filter..........3.8 liters Add extra oil when replacing filter. After refill check oil level.

Use Lucas oil treatment and use the 10W-40, if your going to use the 20W-50. Use no oil treatment, the 20W-50 is thick enough. 15W-40 is what's used on the Diesel engines use on the 18 wheel trucks.

if its always done this,it may be a speed limiter,or if it has contact breaker points,they may need gap adjusting,if it has electronic ignition a new ignition box may be required.Try cleaning all ignition wires and checking connections first though
