Is this an acid batter? If so you may need to add water to the appropriate levels for it to hold a charge after you put it on a trickle charger. Otherwise, I would say the battery is dead and you need to replace. Good luck!

My ignition went out on the steering column on my 1996 buick roadmaster, so my mechanic bypassed it and put in a switch and push button start, but the problem is by battery will not hold a charge,

So what does your mechanic think is wrong ? Battery dies overnight while sitting or when driving the battery goes dead ? Two different problems . Going dead overnight means there is a parasitic drain on the battery . ( something is staying on ) Going dead while driving means the alternator isn't charging the battery .

recheck all the battery and wire connections, take the volt meter with you next ride, to check the bat voltage if it stops again.
The stator can develop a layer short, which can be intermittant due to heat and vibration.

Electrical problem

It is probably the battery, as it does charge up, means the regulator is working, but wont hold the charge overnight means battery.
If you ride it when the battery completely dies and shorts out, this may damage the regulator\rectifier, so make sure it has a good battery.
