I ride a 1986 shadow 500 with 32000 miles. recently it started acting up. the rear cylinder cuts out as i ride and it can last for several miles before it picks back up. At the same time, the RpM display drops to nothing. It also has a hard time starting from time to time. All issues are very inconsistent and unpredictable, one day it will run great and the next it won't stop acting up. i replaced the CDI box with one supposively coming from a running bike, checked coils, spark plugs... carburator just got cleaned. Do you have any suggestions?

You need to check for spark when the back cylinder is not firing to see if that is the problem...from there it will be easier to troubleshoot...also check for vacuum leaks.

1983 Shadow 500c has severe lack of power.

Why do you suspect the head gasket?
yes you should check if it has compression.
put another spark plug in the lead of the side thats not working, ground it on the frame and make sure it has spark.

83 shadow starts on one cylinder

you may want to go and have your coils looked at. the first thing you should do though is pull the plugs and see what shape they are in. the plugs will tell you everything about your engine and what it is doing and when. if your plugs are good then go have your coils inspected. do not try this yourself if you do not know what you are doing. there is a very high chance of very high electrical discharge to you. it may even kill you if it hits right.

Engine shuts off when rolling the throttle

They could be related - but what you need to do is first clean out the oil that has collected in the air filter housing - and replace the air filter. Then, clean the oil from the engine - Simple Green and an old tooth brush works great for this. Wash the engine and surrounding areas with soap and water.
Now, with things cleaned off, you'll be able to tell where the oil is coming from after a short test ride. It could be that the oil you saw near the head gasket was actually running from the air box. Hopefully, a new air filter will cure the problems you had with low power and poor throttle response.
