How do you adjust the parking brake on the 1997 sable

there is a Safety Recall Notice
01S08Grease used on the adjustable pedal assembly may enter the brake lamp switch and contaminate the contacts. This may cause one or more of the following symptoms to occur:
-Brake lights stay illuminated or are inoperative.
-Shift Interlock disabled (will be able to shift out of "Park" position without depressing the brakes.
-Speed Control will not activate.
-Cannot shift the vehicle out of "Park."
-ABS Warning light illuminates on vehicles with ABS
-Battery Discharged."

Press the parking brake lever with slip-joint pliers to relieve the tension on the brake cable. Grip the cable's end with locking pliers and disconnect it from the parking brake lever

Check the brake light switch that is located on the brake pedal linkage. Pull up on brake pedal and see if light goes off if fo it either needs adjusted or replaced.

brake shift interlock. Have to step on brake to get shifter out of park. For safety to prevent unintended acceleration.

See owner manual for emergency bypass, if fuse goes or brake pedal switch is inop.

Check under your dash at the levers for the Brake pedal. There are some Interlock switches that get hit by feet fairly regularly. The switch that makes the gearshift unlock is on the Brake pedal.You have to have your foot on the brake to shift out of Park.

When the shifter is stuck you will not be able to remove your Key from the Ignition. You need to press on the Brake and then try to get the trigger on the shifter to move into Park. Once in Park everything will be okay.

Brake shoe removel:

Depress and turn the retainers for the hold-down springs and pins to remove them from each shoe. Slide the brake shoe assembly--including the shoes and springs--down so you can disengage the top ends of the shoes from the cylinder and tilt them to lift them past the retaining plate.

Unhook the lower retracting spring from the front brake shoe to disconnect it. Spread the shoes apart at the bottom to remove the adjusting screw, the screw's retracting spring and the adjuster lever. Remove the front brake shoe.

Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.

Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.

Step 4 Pull the parking brake cable spring back with diagonal cutting pliers, grip the cable with the pliers without cutting it, unhook the cable from the parking brake lever and remove the rear brake shoe with the lever.

Step 5 Disconnect the parking brake lever from the rear shoe by spreading the retaining clip with a screwdriver and removing the clip and its spring washer.

Sounds like the safety switch that allows it to shift out of park with brake pedal applied is faulty.

There is a front cable also /and that is the one i have found to be the one that gits stuck first/ if you cant find any adjustments in the cable Assembly then make sure that cables are snapped in fully & back brakes have some free play in them . hope this helps if you should want any further assistance please feel free to ask. if you adjust rear brakes that will also adjust parking brake
