Hello, My name is David Bolaszewski, I had just bought a ZX6R from a friend that never really used the bike. He had changed the oil and filter on it, but when I was ridding it around the other day it had stalled on me twice on the way back home. Come to find out that he had over filled the oil almost a gallon. So had drained to enough to the proper level now. I'm just wondering since I had rode it around for about 30-40 miles with it being over filled like that, is it going to effect the engine later on down the road? Another question is can I use full synthetic oil on it? I've always trusted Valvoline oil can I use the 10W-40 motorcylce oil for it with a frame oil filter? Sorry one last thing I really don't think my friend did the engine break process also. So is there a recommendation on that? Thank you, David

Expert robswheel had answered most of my questions, but all if them. If I can use Valvoline oil with a frame filter for the ZX6R? Of course the oil and filter are rated for a motorcycle. And I have been looking threw my owners manual for hours and can't find if it says that I can or cannot use synthetic oil? And not to be a rude person, but if I may also get one more opinion on my other questions?

Thank you for all your help they seemed like basic questions, but they were questions a lot of people could respond to. But since I have been asking a lot of questions one more came to me. On the gas cap there is a seal but if it rains/or I wash it water builds up around it. So when I open the cap to refuel it all that water just drains right into the tank. Shouldn't there be a drain somewhere by there? Cause I do see a small port, but it doesn't seem like it's doing anything. Maybe I should just take a air hose to the port and try to blow away some built dirt?

  • David Bolaszewski Jun 29, 2011

yes I understand that water should not be around the cap, but does it stay there cause I've driven in the rain and washed my Yamaha serveral times and water never was around the cap.?

If my oil level keeps rising? Is it possible that fuel is getting into the oil?

Any problems you would have experienced as a result of overfilling would have affected the engine during that running process. The fact you caught it so quick should have prevented ant serious damage from occurring during your ride.

Synthetic oil in a motor cycle is not highly recommended as the viscosity breakdown is much higher in a bike than in a car. The motor oil appropriate grades for your motorcycle are SAE10W-40, 10W-50, 20W-40, or 20W-50. Fram is a great filter and should be more than sufficient for your use.

Listen, as far as the "Wear -in" period is concerned, you should change the oil every 500 miles for the first 3000 miles in order to best break in the motor as well as keep your speeds constant and no over-revving. Another note is that you should remember this is a nice high end bike and the care you provide to it in the early mile will pay off in the long term. Change your filters, make sure your fluids are within range and DO NOT LET IT RUN OUT OF GAS. This will cause any dirt in the tank to enter your fuel system and that will not bode well for your Sunday rides. Enjoy your bike. It should prove to be fun. And remember, other drivers don't see you and panic more often than not, so drive defensively. I can tell you this personally.

Their is a pepcock used from fuel flow, but I would not attempt to use it for water drainage. What you should do is not open the cap, under any circumstances, with water around the cap. The indentation around the cap serves a dual purpose, one to prevent fuel from spilling onto the paint when you pull the nozzle out and two to prevent your scratching the paint when putting the cap back on. Water and fuel do not mix and this could lead to your engine bogging down when the water reaches the bottom of the tank. What you should do is keep a rag around to wipe off the spout whenever you fill up and keep that area of the spout free of dirt, otherwise, when you wash it, wait until the water has dissipated and then clean that area of the tank. It should not require that much cleaning.

Hi there David.Well providing that you have now got the correct amount of oil in the engine and it is running fine and not leaking you shoul have no no further issues. The question whether or not to use synthetic oil is always a difficult one.If the manufacturer suggests it as an alternative well thats fine, you could use it.If however the manufacturer does not suggest the use of then it is not advisable to use that oil. The break in process on most modern motorcycles is not a big deal and normally is carried out in the first 1000 kms and involves not reving the engine to high rpm for prolonged periods or staying at the same rpm for extended periods. This probably is not a major issue to worry about and would really only be evident if the engine uses excessive oil.

I've just dumped the old oil in my 1972 cb350 twin. I've just bought Penrite 20w-50 to replace it as a friend advised me this is the best, another friend told me I should have bought 10w-50. The manual...

Hello,

Just as long as you don't use any synthetic oil products, you can use 10W-40 or 10W-50. I use 10W-50 during the summer months and 10W-40 during the winter months.

Synthetic oils are not made for old bikes and will most likely cause damage to your bike, especially your clutch system.

I hope this helps. If you find this information useful, please vote on this post. Thank you.

I want to know how many quarters and what kind of filter i need for my zx6r 2006,also where i can get the motor oil and filter?

Try a bike shop for Kawasaki or even a car part shop that has listing for motorbike filters and normally they also sell the oil. Check your owners maual for the SAE requirement. You can try Castrol or Belray website. Good luck

My '02 zx6r has oil in the air filter box. I found the vent tube from the engine/ transmission was spraying oil into the air box. Even before the oil would spew the engine would die when the hose was...

it sounds like there is to much oil in the engine the same thing happened to my zx6r, hold the bike upright on level ground then check oil level on the glass viewing window which is on the right hand side of engine, you should see oil level between the low and high marks, if level is above top line you will need to drain some oil out by undoing sump bolt or using a siphon, when ever checking oil level bike needs to be upright on levelish ground some people check oil levels when bike is on side stand which is wrong as it shows oil level as low when in-fact its probably right

Bought a 2004 CBR600 RR how do i check and add oil

Oil should be changed every 2 to3K miles. Anytime i buy a used bike i drain the oil right away cause u never know what might be in there...I recommend Castrol Syntec Actevo 10-40 wt. motorcyle oil..buy 4 qts...Put bike level on level ground and after you have drained oil and spun on a new filter...put in 2 qts...then check dipsticks (crisscroos marks on bottom of dipstick should be covered in oil when oil is full) slowly top off checking dipstick frequently so as not to overfill...proper dipstick check is to unscrew stick, wipe it off and reinsert without screwing it in, when oil is to top of crisscross you are full...My friends 2002 F4 has a sight glass NOT a dipstick so incase that's what you have watch oil level in sight glass (should be 1/2 to 3/4 full) Drainplug is under engine and is 17 mm...Good Luck to you friend....Tim

Chang oil and care of filter of oil

Hi,

How to change Oil>>
Step 1.
Put the bike and your tools in a convenient place. Raise the bike onto its kickstand in a clear area that can get a little dirty. Gather your new oil, tools, rags and drain pan in one place so you don't have to run to get a tool in the middle of the oil change.
Step 2.
Find the drain plug and filler cap. Before you begin to work, make sure the engine is not hot, though it should be slightly warm. Remove the filler cap so that the oil settles to the bottom of the can and can be properly drained.
Step 3.
Place your drain pan underneath the bike's drain plug. You can use a flat piece of metal, or even a piece of cardboard, to channel the oil into the drain pan.
Step 4.
Use a socket wrench to open the drain plug. Open the plug slowly so any built-up pressure can diffuse. Keep an eye on the oil's flow so you can catch as much of it as possible with the drain pan.
Step 5.
Change the oil filter. While this is not strictly necessary, it's a good idea to take the time to change the bike's oil filter. Locate the oil filter using the motorcycle's manual and replace it with a new one.
Step 6.
Replace the drain plug and refill the oil. Make sure the drain plug is securely fastened and then pour fresh oil into the tank, using the amount of oil that is specified by the bike's manual.

>>After 5000 kms you need to change the filter. Oil brand is a matter of preference as oil and filter is really a cheap price to pay so that your engine will last and last.

please rate this solution.
Thanks for using FixYa.

No filter, it has a screen helt in place with a spring about the drain plug. It just catches metal fragments, but not really hard to change it out.
