I have a 1990 Yamaha Radian 600 and I recently got the bike running again, however after riding the bike for a couple of days I noticed my garage was reaking of gas vapors. Last night I took off the gas tank and noticed the fuel **** was leaking gas. I believe the fuel is not suppose to flow unless the fuel **** is placed in the PRI position. It appears the tiny gasket on the fuel **** is allowing gas to drip out. Would it be possible to just get a gasket perhaps from an autoparts store and trace the gasket out to replace the existing gasket or do I need to just get another fuel ****? I ran gas that had 15% Ethanol in it and after that it appears the fuel **** started leaking. What is your opinion on running Ethanol in a motorcycle? Thanks

I used to work with a guy whose competition bike used only ethanol. The benefit was an extremely high compression ratio could be used but not so much that the fuel had a higher octane rating but because it had a lower calorific value and therefore a great deal more fuel was needed and it had a huge cooling effect on every fresh charge - so in effect it had a minor supercharging effect as a super-cold charge is more dense.
Because such a large quantity of fuel was needed the standard carburettor jets were useless and he had to modify his by drilling them a much larger size.

I think running with 15% ethanol could leave the air/fuel mixture a little on the weak side but if it starts and runs ok why worry...
The usual rule-of-thumb is petrol can be corrupted by up to 10% on a temporary basis without modification...

I am not familiar with the fuel tap used by your bike. Historically all the spare parts were available for quality fuel taps but these days is anyone's guess - you need to ask the Yamaha dealer. You could be lucky as there is often a requirement to clean the interior of a motorcycle fuel tap during routine maintenance and so gaskets, fibre washers and o rings could be available.

SOURCE: 2007 yamaha virago won't start - replaced spark

it's not that your not gettin gas it's that the gas is not getting thru the carbs to the engine. your bike will probably start w/choke on and then die, your jets are clogged and happens to most bikes that are stored w/gas in the carbs.,,,clean them if you know how or take it to a trusted mech...good luck to you...Tim

SOURCE: Two questions: Oil leak from top of engine; bike shut down ridin

the battery terminal being loose would cause that, since the rectifier would freak out. the leak you speak of is probably not eh head gasket ro you would have compression problem with amount of oil that can run down the bike. It sounds like a corner on the valve cover gasket or something I think there is a cover for the valve adjust ment there so check it out the gasket may be worn. no biggie get a new one.

SOURCE: 1995 Yamaha Virago 250 needs ignitor unit

Motorcycle dealers do not stock parts for bikes more than 10 years old. "Parts Dealers" buy the old parts from the motorcycle dealers and manufacturers and make them available online. Babbitt's is a very good source and can ship the part(s) to you. Babbitt's has an ignitor in stock.

Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx

SOURCE: What is the off position for the petcock

up (res) is reserve, down(on) is primary, center(marked as pri is for prime, used for if ran out of fuel or drained the carb or been sitting for a long time). There is no off as the fuel system is vacuum fed instead of greavity)

SOURCE: 1986 Yamaha Radian stops running after 20 minutes

I have no solution but I am having the same damn problem w/ my 1984 Honda Shadow 500. Get to me and let me know which it was. Good post Molexis5 I'm gonna start running through these possibilities myself.

Testimonial: "Carbs and petcock were bad, but the problem still occurs. Repair shop suggests ethanol as the culprit and sold me an additive. Not sure it works yet"

Radian idles high at 4 g then drops down to 21/2 g then dies

Your Radian has 4 Mikuni carbs. If just one has a stuck float or one set incorrectly it will overflow with gas and run out. The bike will run poorly if at all. You need to pull all the carbs and clean them thoroughly. Check you r fuel line too for leaks and cracks. Make sure your air filter is clean and the boot going to the carbs from the airbox. Check the boots on both sides of the carbs for cracks. Air leaks can cause the idle issues you describe but you have to fix the overflowing carbs first which might fix all of it. Make sure you have a nice large work area, don't lose the small jets or strip the bolts. This answer is directly for your issue you have presented. Good luck!
