Manufacturer recomeds tensioner @ 40k but please change them at 35k. My rear tensioner failed @ 40150 ks and two bent valves, valve stem seals, head gasket + the two 50$ tensioners + labour, i was back on the road.
as for the servicing i personally have been doing 5k oil and 10k oil and filter change. As long as the service intervals are with in six months apart i dont think you wil have a problem. If you dont do many k's change your oil at least once every six months-oil is cheap.
SOURCE: 1998 honda vtr firestorm starting problem
Biggest problem with Firestorms is the voltage regulator overheats and burns out, remove the seat cowling and check the wiring and unit. Newer ones have a heatsink built into them if you need to replace, checking the pulse generator is easy, measure the resistance between the 3 yellow wires that plug into the reg, they should all be between 0.2 and 0.5 Ohm
SOURCE: where should the temp gauge read on a vtr
normal op temp should hover between 150-180. sounds high huh. it will stay close to 150 most of the time but look out for more than 180

i replaced mine on my cbr f1 with a salvaged one... a couple of bolts and it took me 20 minutes with fairings off. it was a good thing i replaced it, because the old one was worn down really bad, and its was wobbly. I heard that if you use an aftermarket and you don't know what your doing you could cause damage. can i get some feedback, thanks
