SOURCE: dies at idle

  1. Carb jets may still be dirty or improperly sized.
  2. The Cam and/or Cam journals are worn down and allowing some play in the timing.(Very common on the XR's)
Sounds more like carb or timing issues to me

The stator could be going, but it doesn't sound like this is your issue.

Please rate this a fixya

SOURCE: Bike is sputtering in high 2nd/3rd gear, best kind in idle

Sounds like a lean condition. Spark plug should be a tan brown.
I would say the carb probably wasn't drained prior to storage and your main jet is gummed up. Gas deteriorates very quickly especially in vented containers like the float bowl of a carb.
clean your carb for sure.

Would suggest you service the carb as you may have a partially blocked main jet...otherwise I would need more information

My kymco yup 50 does not idle. The lights on the dash flicker, and it dies. I can rev up the guess, but as soon as I let go, the bike dies. What's going on?

Give the bike a service, plugs, filters and the battery voltage when the machine is revving at about 1000 revs - the voltage should be about 13 volts (give or take a bit) But I believe you have a blocked air filter or the wrong plug.

1996 sportsman 400 wont idle. Had the carb cleaned by a "mechanic" after the bike took off wide open and driver was injured. He said the float stuck and he "fixed" the problem. Now...

I have NEVER heard of a float sticking and causing that issue. Sounds to me like the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) on the right handlebar isn't or wasn't adjusted. There is a thumb nut on the throttle cable coming out of the ETC switch. Loosen the screw and turn the cable in or out to get 1/16 to 1/8 inch freeplay on the thumb throttle. Too loose and it won't idle, too tight and it will pull the throttle cable tight and rev engine. It could also be a carburetor issue if it runs with choke. Either the idle screw isn't adjusted or the pilot jet is plugged. There is a large thumb screw coming off the carburetor, turning clockwise will turn the idle up. Let me know if you need anything else, Daniel.

I just bought a 2004 Honda Shadow 600cc that had been sitting for a while. When I pull the choke the engine will idle but as the choke hits the middle the bike dies. also once its running I have to ride...

Sounds like you have a float sticking in your carburetor, is this a single carb or a duel carb? , also gas can go stale and your bike will run like **** if it also has been subjected to tank condensation and water in your gas, that also maybe your problem, I would drain the tank and drain the carb or carbs, and start off with fresh gas and would use 89 octane or better, also pickup some StarTron Enzyme gas treatment, it will stabilize your gas for up to 2 years, and remove the ethanol from your gas, that is a bad for your motor, try it you will never go without it. Good luck, Rick.

My Susiki dies sometimes when I make a stop or slow dow suddently. Whats the problem?

Hello
I would start with the easy less expensive stuff first.
Check/Replace your spark plugs. Carbon fouled, sooty plugs don't like to idle.
Clean/Change your airfilter. Dirty air filters choke the motor. choked motors either stall or rev high.
Carburetor idle screw needs set.
that is adjusted after the bike is warmed up to operating temperature, then set idle.
If that doesn't have you cleared up then you'll need to have your carbs cleaned.

Have a great weekend

2007 fatboy engin dies when pulling in clutch to shift

I could be because the engine idle speed is set too low. Will the bike idle on it's own? If the bike is equipped with a carburetor, the idle speed stop screw is located at the top right side of the carb. You may have to take the air filter cover off to get to it.

If the engine is fuel injected, you'll have to take it to a shop that can set the idle speed as it is controlled electronically.

Good Luck

My gilera stalker 50,will rev out on the main stand ,but when i ride it on any hill it dies unless you let of the revs.the engine seems to be hunting for revs .i have cleaned the carb ,new plug and air...

Sounds like an air leak between the carb and cylinder. This would lean the fuel/air mix causing a lack of power on hills. It can also cause the bike to rev up by it's self on idle and flat surfaces. If the bike is not over 3 years old you should be able to tighten the manifold clamps and then tighten the manifold mount bolts. The rubber should still be soft enough to re-seal the connections. If over three years old the rubber seals and manifold connections are probably hard and cracked and will no longer seal properly. Just get new seals, gasket, and rubber manifold and you should be back in shape. If not, it is possible the crank seals are the problem. They can go bad and lean the mix. I mention the seals last because it is not an easy fix. I hope this helps.
