Hi.

About the float valve, the float and needle/valve system determines the amount fuel coming into the carburetor chamber. The fuel in the chamber goes later to the jets. All that you have to regulate is the needle height. Regulation can be done according to specs.

Here service manual with specs:Honda XR250R 96-04

or: Honda XR250R 96-04

If they do not work, use: Honda XR250R 96-04

Here a link showing pictures and steps of float regulation.

Once you are in the float chamber, check the valve, clean the chamber and the valve system.

The valve sometimes can become sticky, particularly if the bike has been left standing for a while. To do maintenance on the valve, remove the carb cover and lift the float gently, ensuring that the needle is free to move without sticking. To clean the system, take out the float pin, remove float and needle and spray carb cleaner using a pad to clean needle and the seat. When you reinstall, be sure that the needle pin is shaped correctly and sitting properly in the carb.

Here an exploded of the carb, click on the picture to enlarge:

Near to the needle, in the float chamber there are the jet valves. These can be adjusted using a special wrench tool. If you do not have the tool, the screw can be turned into a regular screw by using a mini-saw to cut a line in the middle of the screw head

The float valve sometimes sticks or stays open and the carb floods and then the engine I've had carb off checked float and valve seems ok but still floods CAN ANYONE HELP v-h-b cheshunt...

The needle valve has a very fine neoprene tip which especially with newer gas (they sneak a lot of alcohol in) deteriorates and leaks.
Replace the needle and seat, check your float and be sure it's not leaked(if metal, give it a shake next to your ear, listen for gas sloshing) or the float saturated (composite float, take it off put it in a jar of gasoline, if it sinks its bad).
If you really want to be sure, check the float height according to specs and adjust as necessary by bending the tang where the float and needle meet. Best of luck to you

1992 FXRS Dyna Glide. Gas leaking from overflow valve off the carburetor. Help please!

If it is a continuous flow the vacuum operated shut off valve is likely defective and not shutting off the flow from the tank when it should when there is not vacuum to keep it open BUT also the needle and seat are likely not cutting off the flow of fule into the float bowl as the float is not closing off the needle and seat assembly due to float or float setting problems and or a defective needle and seat.
