I have replaced the battery and ignition unit on my 1985 suzuki 700 es, the bike really sounds like it wants to run but wont start. Starter turns but engine won't kick over. Any Ideas?

Is it getting gas properly? Has it been sitting around for a while? The carburators on motorcycles need to cleaned after sitting around. The jet could be full of varnish. Are you getting spark for sure? Pull out a spark plug and put it in the wire, crank it over and see if the spark plug sparks. When you pulled the plug was it wet at all with gas? Then it probably isn't getting gas right. Just some of the things you could try.

First of all, my bike is a 1999 Dyna Lowrider, with an 88 cube motor. I have roughly 80000 miles on it, and I've had the cams changed out to gears, and a bigger Screaming Eagle carb installed, all by a...

G'day, Maybe I can give you a few Ideas on how to start
.I'm thinking it may not be running on both cylinders properly and an easy way to check is to start the bike from cold(do this test in the first few seconds after starting from cold DON'T BURN YOURELF),put a bit of spit on your fingers and quickly touch each exhaust header in turn, to see that they are all warming up equally together. This will narrow down if your problem is related to one cylinder.
If one pipes is cold/er than the other then you know which cylinder is causing the problem.
If you find that this is the case- one of the headers are cold then.
Remove the spark plugs-Keep in order.Examine the plugs-used plugs tell a story. How do they look?clean?black & sooty? Are they the same colour?
Re-fit plugs to caps, sit plugs on metal of cylinder head, press starter - cheack for spark on both plugs.DO NOT HOLD OR TOUCH PLUG/CAPS WHILST CRANKING-WARNING - HIGH VOLTAGE- CAN KILL.

I can also suggest a few common problem that bothered most Harleys'.
They were notorious for open circuiting their spark plug caps on either cylinder.Having the coils tested will confirm this. If you have a multi meter let me know & i'll guide you through testing them.
If you leave the ignition on & kill switch on on a Harley, they cook the coils- quite common.
I hope this helps you to narrow down your problem.
If not let me know & I'll try & help further.
Kind regards Andrew Porrelli

1983 yamaha venture royale 1200--- no power on high end. runs great at idle and going thru the gears up to 50mph then sluggish after that. changed the air filter, gas filter, plugs and brand new non...

good maintnance what you did. but these bikes lacked power in high gear and I used to always have to gear down and pick up more spead. remember that they are a touring bike so you shouldn't even be in 5th at 50mph. try this build enough speed and stay in 4th and don't go up to 5th unless you hit at least 60mph or a bit more. I have an 04 now and guess what, they are all the same you gotta build enough speed before 5th, I toped the 110mph on mine just last week. moral of story, don't treat them like normal cruisers, stay in 3d gear when around town. 4th is just as you get on the freeway and 5th is only for freeway.
I hope this helps.

1986 VF500F Honda Interceptor Just bought the bike today. The guy we bought it off of said it needed new spark plug wires. He gave us the wires and also the coils. My husband replaced the spark plugs,...

Any idea how long the bike sat without running? So assuming spark plugs weren't wet, it's likely not getting fuel. If it hasn't run for a year or so, you'll have to empty the fuel tank and drain the carbs. Try fresh gas and new spark plugs. Make sure the fuel tap is on and fuel is flowing into the carbs. Also be sure your choke is closing when you move the lever. Check to be certain kill switch is in the run position. Charge battery so you have good cranking power.

My bike turns but dosent get the spark to fire up

Quite often I've found on older bikes the coil can become corroded.  I would begin by taking apart all the electrical connections between the battery, ground, the plugs themselves, the coil, and the generator, and giving them a good clean.  Most of the time I've found, that should eliminate your problem.  A good way to troubleshoot this is to jumpstart the bike.  If the bike will start (i.e. has spark) while jumped, but will not run when you disconnect the jumper cables, it is most likely a corrosion problem somewhere in your system.
Good luck with your bike!

Tyres

If you are considering racing in F4 or Buckets on your motoFXR you have a choice of running street tyres (BT39 are great) in the production class or you can fit slicks and run in the Super Bucket class (these are South Island Classes) if you fit slicks on stock FXR rims you need to run tubes inside , the slicks are 95/70-17 fronts and 115/70-17 Rears, same as RS125 GP bikes use, this is not a perfect solution as the rims are slightly narrow and the contact patch on the ground is not optimum. To get a really nice profile on the tyres you can fit some other rims, my bike has RG200 rims and the tyres fit great, GSXR250 rims are good also they have a 2.5” front and 3.0” rear, there is a wee bit of machining to be done at each end as the front bearings don’t fit the fxr axle and the rear disk has to be moved inwards aprox 10mm. Usually the slicks we run on F4 or Buckets are used RS125 tyres which are relatively cheap but sometimes hard to find. A 15hp bike doesn’t exactly eat tyres like a 50hp bike so they last for ages, if they are a bit hard you can borrow a grooving tool and cut some groves in the tyre, this makes them heat up more, also it makes you feel better about riding with slicks in the rain
