I have a 1994 Ford F150 5.0L 4x4 and its been shifting hard from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 3rd but it doesn't happen all the time. Any suggestions on what could be wrong? I believe it has the E40D trans.

This transmission was a problematic transmission for Ford. The problem is a shift solenoid and or another valve malfunction in the valve body. The only way you are going to solve the problem is to place some line pressure gages on the ports that allow the taps to do so. This will tell you what is going on as far as pressures are concerned. I have rebuilt many of these transmissions. If you trailer tow a lot and the tranny has high mileage on it then it is probably had it. They are not good for many miles if you put them into hard service. Like I said a very problematic transmission. Sorry I can't help more, but I would have to have the tranny to check the options. If you take it to a tranny shop they will more than likely replace it with a rebuilt unit. Be prepared to shell out around $3800 dollars for the tranny.

F150 4x4 1994 shifting real hard..changed the trans filter and fluid and didnt see any metal shavings or salt after it helped a little but still hard coming into 2nd

I usually go to http://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/ford/ranger/1994 for timing belt diagrams. That link is to the 1994 ranger, surprisingly they didn't list the F150 at all. You didn't post the motor size or I would have tried getting you a direct link to that motor.

Loud clicking noise coming from engine when at high rpms. I have a stick. The noise happens just as I'm about to shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th. Doesn't happen much in 4th gear or...

sounds like the rockers or lifters have some play due to wear.you don`t say what rpm you are shifting at other than high rpm.by changing the oil you have increased the viscosity of the oil as its new and not dirty and thin and cold oil is thicker than warm oil.you might want to try a heavier oil to see if it helps.you may not get this noise out unless you replace components or adjustment of rockers if they are adjustable.if its not very bad you may have to live with it.

This is most likely the first signs of transmission failure. There's not much you can do aside from getting it rebuilt. This should be a 700 R4 they're a pretty easy transmission to rebuild, however you want to do it sooner than later. Many of the parts can be re-used IF you don't let it go too long. I've rebuilt hundreds of these and I'm here to tell you that I'd rather not destroy 500-600 dollars worth of hard parts if I don't have to.

Honestly, while there is a chance that there is a bigger problem, it sounds more like its time for a transmission service. Hard thunking shifts when starting or stopping with no other apparent symptoms on older vehicles can usually be corrected by a transmission flush. if you pull out your tranny dipstick and the fluid is any darker than bright red and/or smells burnt (smell should make you cringe a bit) then take it to a shop and get it flushed out. I recommend a service center that uses a BG power flush unit. These services seem expensive on the surface but only have to be done about once every 3 years and can prevent more costly and involved repairs down the road.
