Question about 2006 Yamaha Road Star Midnight Silverado

My yamaha road star silverado has a ticking noise coming from the exhaust system when idling and the noise goes away when you throttle up alittle doesnt sound lkie its coming from the motor i was told it was coming froming an exhaust leak what should i be looking for to correct the problem

Are you running on original pipes or have you installed aftermarket pipes that are louder ?? I had the same problem with aftermarket pipes and come to find out my carbs were not jetted the way they were supposed to have been done when I installed the pipes.Also there are two chrome tubes starting at the front of the engine going under the seat towards the rear--- there is a rubber hose connection connecting each side .You should disconnect these hoses and bypass the tubes-- in other words use one hose to connect the front two tubes together and the other to connect the rear tubes together , its some sort of early emmission thing that will cause some backfire

When I bought my star 1300 I noticed that the clutch was making quite a racket. So I took in to the dealer, and they told me that it was normal. Well after a year that dealership had sold, and the new dealer checked into the noise problem that I had been hearing. Anyways what they found out was that Yamaha knew about the noise, and had a retro kit that fixes this. It consists of new bearings a couple of gears, and the whole clutch basket. I was told that there isn't a recall on the 07's. But if you complain, they will fix and replace the parts for free. I saw that the parts at dealer cost were 350.00. and who knows what the labor would have been. I finally got mine fixed and it sounds like a nice bike now. Thanks Yamaha. I also put on a set of cobra speedster longs, and a fi200r fuel management system. Made the bike sound better than a harley. It also took out the pulsation that I used to feel.

I would be looking again at the cam chain tensioner. I have replaced 2 on my 05 so far and it was doing the same thing. the other known problem for noise in the engine like that is the valve guides are know to wear prematurely on 05's and the 03 and 04. Yamaha knows about the problem and will fix it under a one time warranty even if you do not have the extended warranty on the bike. Make sure you talk to the dealer about premature valve guide wear.

I have a 07 yamaha road star 1700 that has a slapping noise coming from engine when at steady rpms when letting off or accelarating it goes away

My 2001 yamaha 1600 roadstar backfires and cuts out just before I shift. It idle fines. it runs good between gears. It cuts out just when it get up in higher rpms, just before I shift.


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
3. Faulty main circuit breaker and or connections.
4. Faulty ignition coil and or connections.
5. Faulty spark plug, oil or gas fouled, wrong heat range or service type, wrong gap, loose in the cylinder head, broken electrode or insulator.
6. Faulty spark plug cables, leaking or broken, internal damage check for spark leakage in the dark.
7. Faulty ignition module, switch, CKP, MAP, CMP, sensor and or any connector in the ignition circuit could have corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets
8. Burnt exhaust valve or air leak in the exhaust system.

Cuts out at highway speeds


Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery, should have 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a load test if necessary.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
10. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
11. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
12. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
13. Fuel tank empty.
14. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
15. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
16. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.

1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.

8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.

2005 roadstar silverado 1700 is popping how do i stop it


Hi Bobby, popping on deceleration is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and the correct torque applied to all exhaust clamps. Coughing is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs of location by a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals. Spitting is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is set to lean. I have a 2005 Road Star Silverado and it seems like the timing is retarted at low rpm, because it intermitently coughs when i blip the throttle, sometimes it dies. I have checked and the accelrator pump...


Hi, Rempelabe if your carburetor/exhaust is:
COUGHING is usually caused by an air leak in the intake system and will generally have the same telltale signs, a wet or damp buildup of oil/gas seepage at the intake manifold to cylinder head or carburetor to intake manifold connection and in rare instances a worn throttle plate shaft and or seals.
POPPING on deceleration is usually caused by a lean fuel condition or an air leak in the exhaust system and is generally located where black carbon soot is seen as a flashing build up from any joint connection. This condition can easily be remedied by removing and cleaning both joint pieces and reassembling with high temp silicone and torquing the exhaust clamp to the proper spec.
SPITTING is usually caused by a faulty accelerator pump and or nozzle, or the float bowl needle and seat leaking and overflowing through the main jet mixing well nozzle, or the air-fuel mixture screw is adjusted too lean.
BACKFIRING is usually caused by a sticky/tight intake valve or a timing issue, 180 degrees out or cam chain off 1or 2 teeth.
