SOURCE: hard to start from cold

Hi brownboots,

Have you tried using the choke to start it when its cold?

Secondly the air-fuel mixture may require to reset, but before you do tht after a spin , remove the plug and examine it ....it should be brownish and dry!
Also make sure the saprk plug is of the correct type per manufacturers specs.

Hope this would help.

Knight.

I would check for a blockage in the carburettor fuel inlet or the reed valves may have something forcing them open.

If your bike is spitting back through the carburetor, this is an indication that the fuel air mixture is lean. They come jetted lean from the factory so that they can pass the EPA emissions test. If this is something that has just started, you may have a partially clogged jet in the carb. I'd check the accelerator pump as well. Take the air filter off the carb and look just inside the mouth of the carb. You'll see a brass nozzle in there. With the engine OFF, crank the throttle grip to wide open. You should see a stream of gasoline squirt out of the nozzle. If not, the accelerator pump diaphragm needs replacing. Also check the operation of the VOES switch. With the engine idling, disconnect and plug the vacuum hose going to the switch. The engine idle RPM should drop. If not, the VOES Switch may be bad.

Good Luck
Steve

If indeed the carb is clean, it might get "false" air, air after the carb, as the mixture is not rich enough to start when cold. Likely the jets could still b partly plugged... sounds really like a fuel/air problem.

Aprilia rs 125 won't start!!

right you done quite a bit, so whats left, fuel seems ok .. so ht lead ht cap, spark plugs dont always come with right gap, any leaks with airflow either side of carb, remember the filter often acts as a restrictor too. try the putting a small amount of fuel in cyclinder after cleaning plug, should atleast get a backfire, is choke setup ok, carb mix if not factory sealed is generally 1 and 3/4 turns out from tight,

Be certain the battery is in good condition. Install a new spark plug. Clean the carb and air filter. Use the throttle sparingly. The carb has a power valve that gives an extra shot of gas each time the throttle is twisted. Too many twists and the engine floods out. Please rate my answer. Thanks!

I would suggest you replace the 2 coils. Also, is choke closing properly? The carb if never rebuilt, could cause this problem. A carb kit and 2 coils should not cost much, maybe 20 each for coils and 17 for carb kit. Make sure carb is adjusted properly with outboard in water and warmed up. Mixture screw should be turned in slowly clockwise until engine just pops(lean). Then slowly open it apprx. 1/8 turn. This will aid engine in starting next time. Also, make sure primer bulb firms up when squeezed.

HOW DO YOU FIX A HARD STARTING YAMAHA 426

Clean the carb. Bear in mind that a new carb costs $1300 or so. Don't drop it. Install fresh spark plug, NGK R CR8E. Get a new air filter. Be sure the battery is in good condition. Don't twist the throttle more than once when cold. Not at all when it is warm. A power valve in the carb squirts gas into the cylinder with every twist. Flooding with gas is quick and easy on this bike.

Have you checked the carb boots for cracks?
the fuel screw under the block off plug? Remove the plug and set the fuel screw to 2 to 2.5 turns and hopefully you'll see a difference on starting, warming up and idling in the cold.

Reset the air and idle screws. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two screws down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each screw one and one half turns outward. Clean the air filter. Install new carb manifold gaskets and be sure the bolts are tight. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. Set the idle speed with the idle screw.

Be sure the plug wire fitting is clean and is a firm fit to the plug.
With engine cold, go with .002 valve lash on the intake and .003 on the exhaust.
