Running to rich on my S&S carb - XLH Sportster 883 Harley Davidson Motorcycles

  • Anonymous Apr 21, 2011

Which S&S carb are you running, and what year and model H-D? You can adjust somewhat to lean it back, but some folks run too much S&S for their bike.

You failed to tell me what year and model bike you have this S&S carb installed. If you have the carb on a Sportster, it should have a 26.5 slow jet and a 66 main jet in it. If it's on a Big Twin, it should be jetted with a 28 slow jet and a 70 main jet. Of course, depending on the exhaust system, the air filter, other equipment on the bike, and your location, the jetting could vary a step or two either side of these sizes I've given you. Another area of concern with the S&S "Super E" model is the adjustment of the accelerator pump. Most people get the accelerator pump set too rich with too large of a "pump shot". This adjustment has to be made according to the way the bike reacts to a roll on of the throttle while riding. You cannot get this set correctly by adjusting it in the shop. For instructions on how to jet your carb, go to the S&S Cycles website and click on "Tech Info". Then click on "Installation instructions" and "fuel systems". Look for the the instruction sheet number 51-1012. http://www.sscycle.com/instructions/instructionslist.php?x_cat=24 This will give you a starting point to jetting yoru carb. Keep in mind that when dealing with an air cooled engine, it's better to be slightly rich rather than too lean. Lean mixtures create a lot of heat.

Good Luck
Steve

Engine won't start until gas is poured into carb throat, then runs OK after warming up. Carb was disasembled and cleaned. Didn't run at all before that.

Check the carb settings, make sure you're not running it too lean under a load.

Kohlers always like to run a little on the rich side, especially if tuned with no load.

Warm it up, tune it, then verify the settings with the deck running
(WATCH YOUR TOES - LOCK THE BRAKE DOWN).

Lean (CW) until is cuts out, rich (CCW) until it loads up, 1/2 way between,

then about a 1/4 turn back to the rich side (CCW). And then recheck idle settings.

POULAN PRO CHAINSAW DOES NO WANT TO RUN AT FULL THROTTLE & WILL BOG DOWN UNDER LOAD. TRIED NEW GAS & CHECKED SPARK PLUG. HAD IT TUNED UP ONCE & STILL NO BETTER.

If this machine has a spark arrestor in the muffler this may be blocked, check around the muffler outlet for a gauze which may have carboned up.You need to find out if it is running rich, or lean which is causing the problem. too rich a fuel/oil mixture will also cause the machine to bog down at full revs, it should run a 50-1 mix with good quaility two stroke oil. If it is running too lean it will also cause this type of problem ( blocked fuel filter, cracked fuel hose, dirt in the carb )

Were is the fuel fiter

the factory does have a sort of filter that they install on the fuel petcock( on/off fuel switch mounted under tank) but it is a screen( usually plastic) you have to take the 2 screws off and remove the on/off switch to get to it( drain fuel first)......but they hardly ever get clogged!!!! you can check, but i dont think thats your problem...sounds to me like your either running to rich or to lean which will be a carb issue.... do you foul plugs allot?or get a black oily residue leaking from exhaust?( to rich or to much fuel to engine from carb ) if not then sounds like its running to lean.( not enough fuel) ( rich or lean will cause it to bog when hammering on throtle..) if your running lean i would remove carb and clean with carb cleaner( might have a partially pluged jet in the carb.......

1990 GSXR 750 L, fuel smell when running. has 1100 jets in the carbs(apparently!) Is there an easy solution?

Short answer no, it is most likely running too rich & will need to pull the carbs & replace the oversize jets with, either the factory jets or smaller ones.

Can't keep running

Make sure your choke is fully in closed possition> Sitting up for that long could have allowed vanish to not allow it to seat and cause an overly rich condition
