Hi , i have just bought a 2000 import suzuki tl1000s and my mechanic has came back to me with a huge problem.. i bought the bike cheap cos it had no service history , so when i got it i run it round to my mate who works at bikes to give it a full going over. he put new spark plugs in , full fluid and oil change, balanced the cylinders checked the cam chain and tensioner. changed the air filter , done the vbavle clearences etc. he then told me to come round and check out a loud tick tick tick noise coming from the rear cylinder around the top.. it starts on cold start up, and doesnt go away, i fear for the worse .. can u help? wot is this noise? is my engine going to blow? p.s. i had a good run on her and she is running very well, lifting the front wheel in the first two gears!

i have a 2000 tl1000s with a loud tick tick ticking from the top of the rear cylinder ... my mechanic has dobe the valve clearences , changed the spark plugs and gave her a real good service.. he noticed the ticking noise when he took off the aftermarket exhausts and put the standard ones on.. he told me to ride it and see what i thought .. the bike went real good, lifting the front wheel in the fisrt two gears no problem.. but the ticking noise remains and i can hear it when i was riding the bike.. especially when i was off the throttle.. ive been told allsorts, cam chain tensioner.. (which has been checked!) movement in the piston, i dont think he knows to tell you the truth.. can anyone help, cos i fear it might be serious. and i dont want to change the engine..

hi thanx for the reply, i had a previous guy tell me it could be the worn wrist pin in the piston.. what do u think? the bike has 15000 genuine miles , surely it cant be knackered..? what do u think is the worst case scenario? the ticking sound happens when the bike is cold, and keeps ticking when the engine is warm and gets faster with the revs.. cheers , any info. is much appreciated

Hi.
loud ticking noise on the top of the cylinder would suggest that the cylinder is hitting something at the top of the stroke. the tolerances on performance engines are so close that it is quite common for a tapping noise to occur after work like this. it does need to be sorted, but it is usually quite a minor problem.
try removing the spark plug and checking to see if there is a clean spot, or impact damage at the lowest point, as i have had problems in the past where one brand of spark plug will just touch the piston and another brand plug will not.

try turning the engine over with the plug out to see if you can still hear the noise or not.

another possible is that the valves have been fractionally overadjusted, and one of them is just touching the piston. recheck the valve clearances very carefully.

clearances on this sort of performance engine can be so close that 5 thousanths of an inch can make the difference between correctly adjusted and loud ticking noises.

check these areas first and if the noise persists, please feel free to ask for more advice.

    hi.
a worn wrist pin is a possibility, as is a broken piston ring.
i would check the spark plug and valve clearances again first though.

on 15000 miles, worn pins would not usually be an issue, neither would a broken piston ring.

noises like this normally have a simple, fairly minor cause.
the hardest part is usually finding the cause, not repairing the cause

Hello
Your description is very poor but I suspect you may have either a cam chain tensioner that is weak (had this happen on my GS750) and no taking up the slack in the chain, my tensioner looked good as well, but replacing it cured the nose, and i had tried everything you did to cure the tick. The next possibilities are a cracked piston, excessive piston movement in bore or a loose wrist pin in the piston. I would get a Mechanics Stethoscope (available from most auto parts stores) and try and pin point the location a little more accurately. If the nose doesn't change with temperature then look for loose camshaft valve actuator components.

I have heard no reply from you? I have owned Suzuki bikes all my adult life and have many problems and solved them all. I have been a professional mechanic for 35 years give or take and have provided the most common reasons for this noise, there is no cut and dry answer. In any event good luck.

How about holding off on the negative expert ratings until you get the solution you want, because you are not listing to what is said about noises like this. This noise may never cause a problem, heck I've had a tick in my 1996 Corvette engine for 5 years and 20,000 miles. Suzuki engines don't just "blow" up. Period.

Once again here are the most common causes:

    1. Loose or worn valve train component's, camshaft bearings cam followers, timing chain tensioner.

    2. Piston to cylinder wall clearance issues caused by wear.

    3. Cracked piston

    4. Loose piston pin to connecting rod or piston.

This noise is not the lower end, that would make a really loud knocking noise.

I am trying to help, I'm not being whatever you said. You just keep coping and pasting and reposting the same info over and over, no real answers to my questions. Sorry you feel this way. Hope you have a good day.

Just check the things I asked, use a mechanics Stethoscope as mentioned previously by me to try and pin down the location of the noise.

There are a few Suzuki motors that had odd noises. Most likely these are the valve clearances. As mentioned that this was adjusted. See if you can have it checked. These may not be a major issue but to get the most out of the engine it would be worth it.

Check all the valves and timing TB sync, plugs, compression, gaskets. Air in lash adjusters. It is possible that one of the internal runs on the rear rocker box cover gasket is leaking. What this does is starve the HLA for oil ( causes it to tick) and floods the valve area with oil and causes the engine to use oil. Just drain the oil first & add some thin oil. 10w 30 will be ok.Ride it around for a while & see if the ticking goes away.--------------Also get the scissor gears checked. Drain your oil and check your filter for metalic bronze type material. The reason it sounds like the front cylinder is that the rod gets so loose from the bearings being ground away that there is enough slop in the rod to cause the piston skirt to bang away on the barrel. ---------- get all this checked.this will help.thanks.Helpmech.

Most likely its the valves that need adjustment - it should be done every 25000km / 15000 Miles / 24 months, whatever comes first. This is done by replacing the tappet, if necessary. Your mechanic should have no problem doing it - it's a very simple engine. Just make sure he doesn't forgets to replace absolutely every seal in there.

  • Azrael SRL Apr 16, 2011

No, the engine is not going to blow, just that it will wear out faster.

There are three types of tick you can associate with the top end. You adjusted the valves that should take care of the valve tick. A leaking exhaust gasket will often cause popping or backfiring when you decelerate but can often cause an air leak at the exhaust port that sounds like a loud tick or clicking sound . This often happens when an exhaust system is changed but the o-ring gaskets (crush gaskets) inside the head exhaust ports are not changed. Changing the exhaust gaskets is easy to do and will fix this type of sound.
The third click sound that is more of clicking or clattering and it is typically associated with a self adjuster for the cam chain tensioner that is no longer holding the tensioner in place. There are two different self adjusters for your bike. They should be easily changeable since they are out side the cylinder and are held on by two bolts. Be sure to get a new gasket when you order your tensioner. Front tensioner runs about $60, the rear runs about $98, and the gasket is about $3. Unfortunately this is probably the noise you are hearing . It is very common for the self adjusting tensioners to go bad and cause the chain to bang against the tensioner slide. Hope this helps .

  • David Belcher
    David Belcher Apr 16, 2011

Your actual tensioner is probably OK. It is the device that pushes against the tensioner (the tension adjuster) that is the problem.

Sounds like a worn wrist pin in the rear piston cylinder. Having that changed will not cost so much by your friend

It sounds like the bike has a bent shift fork. That is a bummer because it is an expensive fix. The entire engine gets torn down just to get to the bad shift fork. This is not a recommended repair for the novice mechanic. Confirm my diagnosis at your local Suzuki shop. tombones49_143.gif
