VF750C with one cylinder not running

Hi, VF750C with one cylinder not running. Exhaust is cold on that Cyl. even after extended running. Checked to see if there was spark (yes). Is there a way to clean out carb without taking everything apart? I have the carb assembly ready to remove, but I'm a little hesitant because of the looks of it...Thanks in advance

SOURCE: Carb removal from 1994 VF750C Honda Magna

You should probably get a service manual.
As I recall: Remove seat, gas tank, side covers and brackets, and plastic things in front corners of frame. Take off rubber intake thingy and slide out air filter cover toward the left side (it's a ***** because of the flap in front). Loosen metal intake housing plate, rotate and remove intake horns being careful not to bend the horns or drop screws down carb throats. Slide plate out.
All four carbs come off as one assembly. There are four rubber tubes connecting it to the engine. Loosen the hose clamps on the tubes and gently pry the carb assembly up. Find safe points on the carbs to pry where you won't break anything, and be gentle. If it hasn't come off before it will take some going from corner to corner till it comes out of the rubber tubes.
You can clean the jets without disassembling the "quad pack".
I put a little oil on the tubes to reassemble. Getting the horns back in is a bit tricky. The plate goes on loose, then they slide into the carbs and rotate as I recall. Good luck

Most likely the carbs need cleaning and adjusting. You may want to richen the A/F ratio when you do it. They are set really lean from the factory. I would go 1/4-1/2 turn out on the A/F screw.

If you are positive the exhaust is not clogged, have you rebuilt the top end recently? The only thing I can think of is the piston is in backwards forcing the exhaust side to push into the carbs. The arrow on the piston always points to the exhaust ports.

If your carbs and plugs are fine you may wish to check into you wiring harness to see if you have a cyclinder not firing due to a problem with wiring (frayed or disconnected).

Hi,,it is a fuel problem(lack of) as it runs better with the choke...make sure the pilot jets are clean and check your float level.

What kind of test light i can use to test for spark or misfiring?

You can use a spark tester (on Amazon for $6)A timing light on each wire at a time or measure resistance of each wire.
You can also run a well insulated grounded screw driver along the running vehicles ignition wires and look for any sparks.Otherwise,if the wires are over 10 years old, replace them.On a cold vehicle that has a steady miss, start it and take the temperature of each exhaust port on the exhaust manifold with a lazer temp reader. When you find a cold exhaust port that's the cyl not doing any work.

I have a 1988 Yamaha Phazer 500 and it is not running on one cyl. Checked spark and good on both cyl and it has 130# of compression on both cyl

If spark and compression seemed good you may need to check the fuel. I would assume that cylinder has its own carburetor. Make sure it is working by spraying some starting fluid through the intake while the engine is running. If the cylinder starts firing you have a carb issue. The often gum up from storage or poor fuel.

One cylinder running only

check the cam lobes, valve springs, the valves them selves especialy the inlet, without looking if its a push rod or chain, but check the cam shaft mechanism ie chain

2005 Lt1000 only one cylinder is running like it should.Pull the spark plug wire off this one and engine will die. New plugs in both cyl. I can pour gas in the intake on the dead cyl side and it will run...

There is a couple things you can check..If you can get a pressure tester i would get one.. If one side run and the other side doesnt run.. a couple of thing come to mind.. im sure you have done some of these so bare with me..

Have you checked for spark? I know you said it runs when you put gas in the intake manifold.. but if it has weak spark and you pouring fuel right into the combustion chamber it will burn it.. But i assume you have already checked it for spark and found out it has it..

Check for compression i know you said you dont have a compression tester but i would get one.. If the cylinder is between 90-110 you have good compression..

And do you know if it has ohv.. If it does the bad cylinder side might need its valves adjusted.. for that you will a feeler gauge and a few other tools but i think you take it to a repair shop.. You dont want to damage your engine..

I am an expert here on Fixya but this time I'm the one that needs the help. I am ASE recertified Master tech and this ones got me stumped. I am working with a 96 Chevy Lumina sedan with a 3.1. It was towed...

I would re-visit the injector and associated wiring. The cylinder is obviuosly firing but rich. What else would dictate the rich condition on 1 cylinder? Maybe a plug wire with intermittent issues.

replace the coil it is most likely bad. observe the engine at night or in a dark environment and proceed to use a spray bottle to lightly coat the coil pack for that cylinder number 3 and if you see an arc at the coil or any where else this will confirm a bad coil but even if you don't see any arcing it still may be a weak coil.

my brain hurts the only thing i can say is either the spark plugs are cracked or gap is closed, or the dist.pick-up is faulty/cap. poss.a bent push-rod on 2&3 exhaust valves this would show good compression but valve never opens to release exhaust. pull v/c and watch rocker arms. good luck please let me know how it goes.
