There are 2 problems. 1) the bike is stalling when I let go of the throttle to upshift or downshift. As long as the throttle is open it runs fine. As soon as I let off it stalls. 2) It doesn't like to start when warm. Starts fine when cold. This bike had an upgrade with a 95 kit.
Hi, Lfriesians and the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ignition coil.
2. Faulty spark plug cables.
3. Faulty temperature sensor.
4. Faulty starter motor.
5. Valves adjusted too tight.
6. Spark plug gap too wide.
7. The fuel line has a vapor lock.

Your going to have to determine if its an electrical problem or a fuel problem. Could be bad plugs a loose wire, misadjusted carb or contaminated fuel or a pluged fuel line. and actually a few other things including a bad piton ring. I would start with the cheap and easy stuff. Drain the fuel tank, clean the fuel filter......see if that helps

Sounds like fuel starvation, make sure all filters are clear of debris and petrol residues, meshes clog easily, the pump can only pump what it can scavenge! If it has carburetor, check jets and floats also diaphragm are in good order and set properly. Good Luck ! The Yeti - Hastings

this may or may not be the same as mine, but I have an 03 XLH 883 and it comes to find out that the Ignition location and componeets is a lot different in most models. Finding parts and information has been a travesty at best. First thing is, everyone uses a different name for the same thing. On my model as it turns out, the Crank/ Cam Positioning Sensor is the same as the Ignition Module. On other Bikes it is mounted elsewhere. From all the reading and searching I have done, each of the symptoms are slightly different, as well as components mounted in different locations. unfortunaly there is alot of confusion on this topic even though it seems like it is fairly common. the new module was quite difficult to locate and replace. PLus the directions/ wiring are quite vague and cloudy. The first Module has 5 wires but the new one only has 2. It is not clear which wire goes to which side of the coil, so be careful when you hook it up...

One more thing to try...loosen the gas cap when it starts misbehaving. If the tank is losing its vent, then it can act that way.

Check for vacume leaks first. Rubber lines..gaskets to carbs ect. Also remove and blow out your fuel line to tank and change out filter. Hope this helps.:)
