Possible areas of concern are:

  • faulty MAF (Mass Air Flo) sensor
  • bad EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculator
  • bad TPS
It's most likely a combination of the 3 but the main cause would normally be the TPS (Throttle Positioning Sensor) which regulates engine idle speeds under different conditions.

Car won't stay running, starts up and then just dies off like it never had a Chance of staying idle.

Hi Johnny, Im AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Johnny, here's something I want you to try. I want you to start the engine while giving it a little gas, not much, just enough to see if it will idle. If it does Idle and stays running with your foot on the gas and dies when you remove your foot. Then go and buy an 'IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR" It mounts on the throttle body. Put that on, there are only two screws that holds it on, very easy to replace. After installing it the idle will be real high, this is normal, just wait it will stabilize and idle normal. NOTE: if it still dies even with your foot on the gas, then you have another issue but this is a good place to start. Hope this helps and please visit my auto-repair-website at: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

1992 mercury grand marquise dies after letting off of the accelerator

Is this engine equipped with an EGR valve? Might have carbon deposits blocking the passageway causing the stalling problem.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

Cheque for disconnected vacuum hoses. sometimes this happen after working around the engine, if everything looks good, start the engine press down the accelerator pedal keep the engine running about 2500 rpm for 3 minutes then let the engine idle, if the engine idle this means you need a new idle speed control motor, if the engine still dies most probable the fuel pump it's going out if you have a code reader it's possible you have some codes and this can give a good direction

Hi, this problem can be caused by a broken fuel pressure regulator diaphragm. With the engine running, remove the vacuum line from the regulator. If gas comes out of the regulator at the vacuum port, replace the regulator.

Running problems

Idle air control valve or a vacuum leak, the idle air control valve controls the amount of air let into your engine when you start or while running you holding your foot on the gas lets more air in.

In park the engine dies; only will run if given gas

It sounds like there is a problem with the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Its job is to open and let air into the manifold when the throttle is closed at idle. If it does not open, the engine dies at idle. The IAC is mounted on the throttle body. Possibly the valve is clogged or stuck, in which case it could be ok again if it is removed and cleaned. Or it is broken, and needs to be replaced. Or, there is a problem with its electrical connection, that needs to be traced. Good luck, let me know if you have any questions.

1995 pontiac bonneville stalls

I just went through lots of troubleshooting and expense on my 1996. Whenever I would lift my foot off the accelerator and was below about 30 mph, the rpm's would starts jumping around and sometimes it would stall. If I gave it a little gas (accelerator), I could sometimes keep it running. It also backfired once in a while. Starts right back up. Also, if I let it idle while in part, it would die after 1-2 minutes.

I ended up finding a hole in the fuel regulator. About a ~$70 part if you get an AC Delco, but very simple to change.
