I have a 2004 VL1500 Intruder. The battery will not keep a charge, I did install a new battery thinking that was the problem. However, it seems that there is a constant drain on the battery from an unknown source. I can remove the battery, charge it on the bench and then install it in the bike, then two days later the battery is dead again. Could this problem be in the front turn signal lights. With the battery removed and the bulbs removed I have continuity between both the bulb contact points and ground, no matter what position the turn signal switch or the hazard switch is in. Since these are dual filiment bulbs are they meant to be on as running lights all the time? All systems seem to be working normal when I do get the bike running. Last comment, this bike only has 5000 KM, I had it shipped from Alberta Canada to Florida wheer there is actually a riding season. Sincerely, Steve

SOURCE: battery does not hold charge new battery fitted

Sounds like a charging issue. First check all wires and make sure they are clean and making good contact, then check for proper voltage at the battery. I ride a harly so I don't know the exact voltage to look for but it most likly is around 13V at the battery if it isn't you need to look at your voltage regulator and stator.

Check the voltage across the battery with the engine running - it should be greater than 13.5V.
If less, then you have a failure in your charging system, either the stator and/or the Rectifier/Regulator.
See this personally authored diagnostic guide on how to determine which part is defective. Also has a recommendation for excellent replacement as opposed to std OEM.

It mught be the bulb that needs replacing or else check the wiring to the bulb for continuity in case there is a broken or snapped bit.If you have a voltmeter then you can test the voltage reading at the point of contact..Sometimes rust builds up and a simple cleaning would solve this.Hope this helps.

2004 Suzuki Intruder VL1500 not running good at cruising speed?

If the spark plugs are black, it is running rich, end of story, you are dumping too much fuel. You need someone that can do carb tuning on the bike. There is help in the Volusia Forums and it appears to be a known issue..

Hi I have a Suzuki vl1500 lc intruder...bike is overcharging. cheack coil, regulator and rec but not the problem. its a brand new battery and bike is charging over 16.1 and up..please help thanks

Double check your battery to be sure that you bought the right kind. Also double check the reg/rec. This device is what is primarily responsible for the charging being correct. Overcharging should fall squarely on the shoulders of the reg/rec. if you didn't already replace it with a brand new part I'd still think that was the problem. If you did replace it, I suppose it is possible for your alternator to be broken and producing an absurd amount of energy, but I doubt it.

Is Idle adjustment important when it comes to charging the battery on a 1998 Suzuki Intruder VL1500? I do seem to have a problem and I find myself having to place a trickle charger on it every once in a...

No, idle adjustment isn't the important thing. Amount of riding and amount of time parked is the thing. If you don't ride much, and it is parked for long lengths of time between rides, you will have a lower battery condition.

However, if you ride a lot and it doesn't get parked for long periods of time, you may want to charge the battery fully then put load test on it to check for one or more dead cells in the battery.

If the battery is not the problem, then you will need to check your charging system.

Here is a schematic, parts list, and prices for your 2004 VL 1500. Friction disks wear out and have to be replaced at regular intervals. Clutch slipping is almost always remedied by replacement of the friction disks.
