Hi all. i'm new to this landrover game, i have a '03' reg freelander td4 when pulling away and steady throttle i am experiencing a rattle/knock from the engine, the car stutters slightly and has black smoke from exhaust, It sounds to me like a timing issue or fuel. Are there any problems with the diesel pumps or injectors on these cars? All help greatly appreciated, thanks

It sounds to me like you have a faulty injector from the symptoms you suggest would get injectors tested
one thing you can try when car is running if you slacken injetor pipes one at a time .you should find the faulty one if thats your problem

Thanks a lot. Do you suppose the rattle may be a loose timing chain?

faulty injecto will play havoc with the engine so would try that first easy to find out slacken injectors one at a time if no difference in sound then thats the faulty one.
not sure what is on that belt or chain , easy fix first, then look at other problems goodluck

2002 landrover freelander will not start but when does runs good

I have the same problem with mine (a td4). It is the fuel pump.
Put the ignition key on the position before it makes the engine start, with the dashboard lights on, and with the motor compartment open, try to listen the fuel pump working (it is a cylinder on the right side under the electronic dark boxes). If you don't listen anything, try to knock it with your fingers. In my case it starts to work again and with attention we can listen some noise (tsssssssss). when I hear that noise, I just come back to my seat and start the motor.
I don't know if the fuel pump can be repaired.
Hope it can help anyone...

Low Fuel Pressure on Landrover Freelander TD4

From 53 reg onwards, diesel pump is under R.H. rear wheel arch, hidden by the plastic wheel arch liner. Older versions have combined fuel pump/sender in the tank (under R.H part of rear seat).
You should be able to hear a faint purr from the pump when ignition is turned on but engine not yet running.
