Lost Over-drive???? All of a sudden I just noticed that my t65 tranny is not shifting into overdrive. It acts like when I put it in 3rd or drive, it goes through all 4 gears just as smooth as ever, however, does not shift for the 5th time regardless of speed. Symptom, you can tell when you leave shifter in 3rd gear, it goes through all 4 gears just as smooth as ever, and you can tell your still in 4th by letting off the gas going down a hill and you can feel 4th is slowing down car and tack slowly slows down. However, if you put car in drive and let off gas going down hill, the tack will drop to 900 or so RPM, and the tranny does not slow car at all. Just as if you had put in neutral. I have replaced filter/fluid, and installed a new throttle position sensor to no avail. HELP! should I replace the PCM (Powertrain Control Module)?

SOURCE: 1998 Olds Silhouette Auto Trans & Speedometer Problem

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, check the wiring/connectors to the speed sensor. The speed sensor is at the transmission would look like the image below.

Incidentally, the speed sensor not only sends signal to the speedometer, is signals are also used by the engine computer and the transmission control. This would partly explain all the other concerns.

Check and perform preliminary visual or necessary inspection. Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

If the transmission is not shifting, could it be the vaccum modulator?

when was the last time the tranny had a new filter put in with new fluid? if the vacuum module was bad, it would suck all the tranny fluid out of the tranny and into the engine from vacuum and you would be smoking out the tail pipe..

Will not shift out of 2nd gear

Tranny most likely shot. I believe yours is a T-5, I had the same issue years back but in 3rd gear. Usually the clutch going out is a gradual thing. So I would have a tranny shop look at it. Maybe find a cheap rebuilt tranny for ya.Look online or a trusted shop.

Ford Ranger 98'Splash don't shift 3rd and

you will need to connect it ti a scanner to confirm but it sounds like your solenoid (there is a solenoid that controls those gears inside your tranny) the part is actually cheap and should take no time to replace. the cost comes in a way of replacing the tranny fluid that will be lost.

1990 f150 transmission up shift to early

Sounds like the passing gear cable is out of adjustment. Get a shop manual and see what the specs are on how to adjust it properly. It is a pretty simple fix.

Transmission does not shift into 3rd and/or overdrive

Well, you could try changing the speed sensor, or modulator valve, which ever that model has. And change the filter and fluid. If it's plugged many of the problems you describe could occur. Good luck.
