Our 1995 F-350 turbo-diesel has developed an intermittent hard starting problem. It is always on a cool morning, in the 40's (but not every cool morning). When the engine finally does fire it is accompanied by a huge cloud of white smoke. The owners manual suggested draining the water separator. We did and it was hard to start again this morning (also in the 40's). If we let it set 10-15 minutes it will usually start fine. The engine runs great and a majority of the time it starts normally. Also, is a diesel coolant additive required for this engine and did it come with the factory with a DCA in it? thanks, john hard starting when cold white smoke-replaced fuel heater started fine half a dozen times and now is starting hard again white smoke ect..Is there anything fuse wiring that could be wrong?

i found a burnt wire from the sylanoid on the fire wall
to the sylanoid on the starter,my original starter may of fryed it
and then i got a new starter(witch was bad),returned that and had the same problem....
checked all my sylanoids and found a bad wire...
dark outside -20below and freezing (worked on it for a week)thanks
I had the same problem with my 96 powerstroke and i went through and changed all the glow plugs and found out that it was just a bad connection on the glow plug solenoid, cleaned the connections up real good and she starts like a champ
Figure anything out yet?
Imagine the white smoke is unburnt diesel. Anybody standing in the middle of it will be able to tell you soon enough.
Most likely culprit is that one or two of the glow plugs aren't getting hot enough. Usually just that the plugs need replacing, but worth checking first that the busbar which runs between them all is getting +12V at the appropriate stage of the process.

i started to have a starting problem i live in alaska
1 day i tried to start it and the sylanoid just clicked
i bumped it with a screw driver and then tried it with a key
it worked...the next day i went out and it did the same thing.
this time no glow plug relay click
you turn the inightion and there is just a click.
i tried knocking on the starter it worked i shut the truck off and then it just click again when i tried to start it?
unboled the starter moved it around bolted it up it worked,shut the truck off same thing.......
i bought a new starter new battery's new side wall sylanoid
new glow plug relay....it started rigtht up....
a day later i tried to start it and it cranked for awhile and the i went to recycle the glow plugs and then the click again?
also on my old starter there is a sylanoid on it.
the wire from that to the postive terminal on the baterry
heated up and melted the terminal....on both the battery terminal and sylanoid?
