Unfortunately I do not have the answer yet, but I will!!! I too am having the same problem with my 2006 F650GS I can easily, smoothly go up and down through all the gears but there simply isn't a first gear! It has been mysteriously replaced with neutral. I am totally down with time off here and there for virtually everything and everyone with the exception of first gear and maybe the sun!!!
Also the neutral light will not go off no matter what gear I'm in... it's like it's trying to fill in for first gear or something.
I've been told it might be a shifting fork but as you can see in the diagram below from

https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51602&diagram=11_2977

that 1st gear and 3rd gear share a shifting fork (part #10). Since I can easily use 3rd gear I should be able to use 1st. So unless I can get some useful information/advice on where to go I will take the engine out of the bike and tear it down and figure it out. What ever I find I will share with y'all!

Hi Rabiraj,

Did you ever find an answer to this issue? I am experiencing the same issue with my F650GS single. It can go into all the other gears just not first, I was first having a bit of difficulty going to neutral but now when you gear all the way down it stops at Neutral and wont go further.

SOURCE: 2005 yamaha r6 shift lever is limp

Wish I could be there to check it. Yes, the shift return torsion spring could be broken. No, the the shift tension spring is not the same as the torsion spring. The tension spring is not the problem. It just indexes the shift drum in proper position for each gear. The stopper screw could have a broken end. The torsion spring may not be hooked in position. It could also be that the shift lever needs to be removed and the bore cleaned free of mud and well as the shift shaft. Be sure the pedal shift lever is not bound up against anything.

Shifter Not returning to start postion after shifting gears.

If the shifter is not returning to it's "center" position, the shifter pawl spring is probably broken in the transmission. With the engine off and the bike on the kickstand with the transmission in neutral, gently depress the shifter lever down until just before it shifts. Then, let go of the shifter and see if it springs back up. Do the same thing lifting the shifter towards second gear. Make sure there is no binding in the linkage. If you don't feel the spring pressure on the shifter, this is an indication that the return spring is broken. Harley had a problem with this on their 5-speed transmissions. Fixing the problem is a major job. You have to disassemble the entire primary drive and pull the trapdoor with both transmission shafts out of the transmission to get the shifter pawl shaft out. I strongly recommend the purchase of a service manual if you plan on doing this job yourself.

I have a 1997 heritage soft tail.....just recently I lost all gears over 2nd......what can be the problem for this?

This is more common than people think. You have a broken shifter pawl spring. All you'll have is low and second gear. With the transmission in neutral, use your fingers to push down on the shifter lever like you're going to shift into low gear but don't shift all the way. What you're doing is feeling of the spring tension on the shifter trying to push it back to the neutral position. Now. lift the shift lever and feel the tension on the spring. I'm betting they don't feel the same. If this is the problem, it is a major job to repair. The transmission gear shafts much come out of the transmission as well as the inner primary. You can take the shafts out of the transmission while leaving them intact in the trap door. Once you get all the gears out of the way, the shifter pawl shaft will come out. I'd advise replacement with one of the improved aftermarket shifter shafts.

1991 softail will not go into 3rd gear.it will go from 4th to 5th

Without being able to see and mess with the bike a bit, I would guess that you have a shifter pawl spring broken in your transmission. It's either the return spring or the spring on the pawl itself. To test the spring, start from the "neutral postition" of the shifter. Regardless of the gear the bike might be in, when you are not pushing down on the shifter or lifting up on it, it is in the neutral position, where it normall sits. Now, using your fingers push down on the shift lever until you feel the transmission start to shift, you feel a resistance. Stop right there, do not shift the gear but allow the shifter to return to the neutral position. Now, lift the shifter with your fingers until you feel the resistance of the transmission getting ready to shift. What you are feeling for is the resistance of the shifter return spring. Does it feel the same in both directions? If not, the spring is broken. If it does, then the problem is something else.

Still if the transmissio will not shift into a particular gear, something is wrong inside the transmission and you'll have to go into it to find the problem most likely.

Lost all gear drive except 5th. i have removed the top of the box and all gears and shifters seem fine.

your neutral paw is broken or the return spring on the paw is broken ...try lifting the shifter up at the front as if your changing into first then down shift you will find you can get all gears doing this
