Hello,
All of the V-Star 1100 models have an update available for the starter clutch . I have installed many in my shop. The update requires a kit from Yamaha and should be installed by a qualified technician. Ask your local dealer about the Yamaha update # M2010-009. He should be able to provide pricing and availability info. A quick note about the cause of the failure:

  1. Low battery will cause engine kickback during starting
  2. Improper carb adjustment or carbs that are dirty from sitting.
  3. Intake air leaks.
Thanks and I hope that this helps.

Looking at the dragstar 100 maunal, there doesn't appear to be a starter clutch.
Maybe you mean the pre engage starter dog is not engaging. The manual just tell one to replace the motor. I would remove the starter, clean and lubricate the dog and bearing then put it back in as that usually fixes it.

I just get a whirring noise when I press the start button .Is this a shot starter solenoid?

Depends on the bike.

Some bikes have starter motors with built in bendix clutches, others have direct drive starters with sprag clutches attached to the flywheel. Either way, the starter clutch is slipping and will need to be replaced.

Clutch is slipping hard to start and drains battery now cant even jimp start it whats wrong

check reason for slipping clutch ( blocked compensation port in master cylinder, jammed clutch cable worn clutch plate)
have a load test done on the battery because if there is a short in any cells then a jumper will only feed the short and not the starter.

Replace starter...still does not engage motor

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.

Vehicle will crank over once then seems like starter slips

What do you mean by the starter slips? One common possibility is the starter drive. It is the one way clutch that keeps the runing engine from over spinning the starter and killing it. Near the end of the drive's life, the starter will disengauge early. the cure is pretty easy, replace the starter.

Starter has a hard time turning motor sometimes. It also will make a noise like the drive gear is slipping a tooth on the ring gear.Is the starter out of alignment or in need of a shim?

No, the starter motor is not out of alignment and a shim will not do any good. Keep in mind that I cannot hear what your starter is doing. But, if you say it sounds like it slipping a tooth or a making a grinding noise, it's probably the internal starter clutch. This part is also called an "over running clutch".

This part is replacable but it requires the disassembly of the starter. If you're mechanically inclined and have the time and tools, you can remove and repair your starter and save yourself a few bucks by replacing the clutch. However, if you are going to have to pay someone to do the job, you're better off to have the entire starter replaced. The extra time you would have to pay for to disassemble and reassemble the starter would negate any savings you would have otherwise realized.

Now, there is also the chance that there is damage to the ring gear on the outer clutch basket and the starter jackshaft. I have seen it on occasions. Both the jackshaft and the ring gear are replacable but the clutch assembly must be removed. I would recommend that your replace both if you find either part damaged. Once you find out which it is, repost and I'll tell you how to repair your bike.

Good Luck

Need to replace clutch

Is your clutch slipping?? Is there an oil leak between the engine/trans?

Replacing the clutch on a R1200GS is a bit involved unless you are very mechanically skilled. You basically split the bike in half to remove the transmission and gain access to the clutch.

If the clutch is NOT slipping, I would suggest removal of the starter motor on the lower LHS of the engine/ trans. and measurement of the clutch disc before you start the work of disassembly.

Starter clutchproblems

Inside the starter clutch are three spring loaded rollers that grip the crankshaft sprocket when the starter spins. These act as a one-way clutch. After many uses, these three rollers can develop flat spots on them and cause the starter clutch to slip. Replacing the rollers and the springs should eliminate any slippage. While you're doing this, make sure the screws which attach the clutch to the back of the mag are tight.
