1997 Vauxhall Passat 1.6L Saloon (P-Reg). Following Flat battery, Right hand side indicators are permanently on - Noticed it as soon as I connected battery charger as ignition key was not even in. Lights stay on permanently - even when car locked. Have tried: 1) Located and removed flasher Relay (which works fine on left side and flashes) - Right lights still stay on. If you engage the hazard light warning, both sides stay on constantly - indicating the supply to the right is now bridged to the left. 2) Located relevant fuse and pulled it (Number 2 on Passat Diagram). Disables Left hand side (working) indicators but Right hand side - still on. If you engage the hazard lights, both sides on constantly so clearly it is bypassing the flasher Relay. 3) Disconnected battery terminal and left overnight. Reconnected in morning. Still on. It’s as if something else that is connected to the right-hand-ade indicators (front-Side-and-Back) are providing constant power. A transistor or shorted relay perhaps in some sort of burglar alarm system? (after all they do flash all lights when disturbed don't they?) NO idea on this one being electrically minded. Next question is how to fix it and what it costs. HAd forgotten all about this one. General conscencus is that it is due to corrosion of the wires (& or connector) that lead to the 'ECU' (I think it's called) unit that sits under the passenger seat floor. (Not the best place for a computer based unit given consensation, wheel spray etc however....). Initially installed a workaround which just cut the battery supply via a remote control as I didn't have the time to spend getting all the cladding off. When I did get round to it, the wires were indeed corroded and after par5 replacement and a bit of resoldering, no worries since. Kept the retrofit though as it comes in handy from time to time. By the way, since then have seen several other VW vehicles - one a 6 seater van just the other day with teh same fault. All six indicator lights on and a faint 'beep beep' from the alarm system. Could be a generic fault on a number of models. *** Tends to happen less when it's hot and dry and that's one way of spottting it - Fault can then dissapear on it;s own as the corroded wires dry out *** G.Hampshire. 2012

General conscensus of opinion is that the wires running to the CCM (comfort control module I think it stands for) unit which is situated under te passenger floor (unusual place you might think for computer circutry) eventually suffesrs from damp be it either condensation or leak of the wheel spray etc. If this is the case, you'll find in warm sunny weather the car is fine and as it gets colder, it starts to sulk and misbehave.

Solution is to hack off all the cladding (which is quite a job) and replace or repair the wiring or connections to the actual CCM box itself. Of course, that's quite a job - not thw wiring part, but getting to it. I installed a workaround which cut the battery power by remote control until such a time as I could have a go at the wiring loom but sure enough, there it was corroded. Data is available on the web if you look enough....

Did you change the battery ? wrong amps or voltage could do that sometimes. it's called reverse polarity.

Vauxhall Tigra 2007 left hand indicators work perfectly. Right hand do not although the dash RH indicator flashes rapidly and I can hear the relay ticking. Bulbs are perfect? Any ideas please?

One Side of the Turn Signal Lights Doesn't Work. ... You may be dealing with bad bulbs, a bad flasher relay, a faulty turn signal switch, or a bad wire or connector between the flasher unit and the turn signal switch.

My right hand indicator wont switch off it stays permanently on and its draining my car battery. my car is a Hyundai coupe could you please help

Are you sure that the hazard flasher switch is off?
It must be a wiring or relay fault or a short, the indicators should not work with ignition off. You need to take it to an auto repairer, but in the meantime so you don't have the hassle of a flat battery, locate the fusebox (it's one one side of the car at knee level ) and try to find the fuse that when removed stops the indicator flashing. If fusebox lid does not make it clear which fuse is for the flashers, then take fuses out ONLY one at a time if flashing does not stop then replace fuse and move to next one. Once you find it leave it out. Of course other things may not work with it out but your battery should not go flat.

got me thinking here .,,,,in all honesty havent come across this on this model before but i have had it on a renault i think it was and it was caused by a chaffed wire under the bonnet near the power distribution box cant see it being the computer as this would run a feed to the relay not direct to the lights as the ECU is only chips and not many power passing transistors in a car ECU ,no check the wiring loom ,also dodnt these vehicles have a parking light that comes on either side of the car when indicator is put to that side ,could something be wrong with that maybe ,Must say though never heard of a vauxhall passat though ,Were you on night shift when you wrote this

I cant find the fuse box on mt t reg vw polo

the box in the engine compartment is right next to the battery, the one on the inside passenger compartment is on the side of the driver side panel, you have to open the driver side door and on the side of the steering wheel panel the should be a cover thats part of the panel, just pop it out with flat head screwdriver gently so you dont leave any scratches and youll see the fuses

I have a M reg Peugeot405 Automatic saloon The

Hi Alan Yes you are right the alarm will go off unless the battery is that flat that it doesn't have enough power to sound the alarm. This is the old catch 22 situation. Have a pair of grips and a 10mm spanner ready to minimise noise time. If you have the radio code, you can unlock it with the key, pop the bonnet, and disconnect the Negative lead with the green thumbscrew and pull it off the terminal first to reduce the risk of shorting, also tends not to spark as much as the other way, then when you come to disconnect the Red Positive, theres no way you can short your spanner to the vehicle earth. Ahhh, Silence! then remove the Positive lead and charge your battery, remove the cell plugs to let the hydrogen gas escape, and make sure its well ventilated, otherwise, BANG could happen, unless its a sealed battery, then don't worry. Once its charged reconnect in the opposite order, but be ready with your keyfob, or better still have a mate ready as soon as you hear the alarm, lock then unlock. Then just re-enter the radio code by pressing the respective number buttons. If you don't have the code, you will need it reading, usually about £10 - £20

Our R reg Sharan will no longer start.

first go to the basics charge the battery fully make sure leads are clean and tight with ignition off put car in gear handbrake off and rock car in gear to turn engine over (make sure you are not on a hill) so as to move starter.
check back of starter wire connection both large power wire and small spade terminal
check wiring on back of alternator plug and main wiring for alternator if all this is ok and it wont start if you have ignition lights but still doing the same then if it is manaual tow the car and try and start it if it is auto you can only replace bit by bit but try battery first from donor car as this is the easiest good luck
