Sounds like you have a bad vehicle speed sensor which will also cause your odometer (the mileage guage) not to function as well. The sensor mounts near the back of the transmission

If you go to an auto parts srore like Advanced Auto etc. Ask them to check your codes first just to make sure you don't have a problem, then ask them to reset it. They do it for free. Hope this helps
DEPENDING ON THE MAKE, MODEL, ENGINE ID OF YOUR VEHICLE GAS MILEGE WILL VARY. ALL VEHICLES TEND TO LOSE EFFICIENCY WITH AGE AND MILEGE ON THE ODOMETER. ONE MILEGE ROBBING ASPECT OF THIS IS THAT THE E.G.R. SYSTEM ( exhaust gas recirculation), TENDS TO BUILD UP CARBON DEPOSITS WHICH RESTICT OR IN WORST CASES BLOCK THE FLOW OF UNBURNT EMISSIONS BACK TO THE INTAKE. ALSO, THIS CONDITION FORMS IN THE AIR INLET, AND VALVE PORTS. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU ADDED INJECTOR CLEANERS TO YOUR FUEL. M.G.
