Question about 2005 Aprilia Mojito Custom 125

1 Answer

My Aprilia Mojito stopped working after I hadn't ridden it in over 6 months so I took it to the mechanic and they replaced the battery, rewired all the dash wires (believing they were draining the battery) and replaced the back tyre. All in all it cost me almost $1000. I got it home and the next time I went to ride it, it did the exact same thing, at first made a wooing sound then when I tried again made a click sound and then no sound at all. I had it jump started by a friend and rode it back to the mechanic where they checked the electrics for faults and after finding nothing insisted it was the battery draining while I wasn't using it so they charged me a further $150 to install a switch that cuts the power to the battery while not in use. When I went to pick it up from the mechanic, he had already started the bike when I got to it. I needed the key to get my helmet out so I stopped the bike, put me helmet on then in front of the mechanic, went to start my scooter and it wouldn't start. He then informed me it was the way I was starting it and tried him self to no avail. It's now back in the mechanic having the battery charged once again and he assures me if I hold he throttle "just right" my bike will start. I have no faith that I will be able to start my bike once I get it home. What should I do? I can't afford to waste anymore money on a scooter that wont start!

Hi, i beleive you have spent alot of money on this scooter, and for not much more you could have bought another machine, it sounds to me like the problem is with the electrics, as you say your mechanic has instaled a switch to cut of the power from the battery when the bike is not in use, this should not be the case as when your key is turned off there should be no drain on the battery at all, so i would sugest instead of fitting a switch, find out the reason for the battery drain and correct the fault, if you have a drain on the battery this may be a contributary factor in the poor starting, normaly modern bikes like yours require no opening of the throttle while starting, the whooing sound you mention could be the starter throwing out,and not engaging, because of the batteries low state. recharging the battery as many times as this is not good for the battery i would sugest obtaining a new battery from another agent, put the battery on the bike yourself, when you conect the battery leads with the key turned off you should conect the red posotive wire first, when you conect the earth neg wire to the battery as you touch it on the terminal you should have no power drain at all, power drain would be identifyed by a spark when conecting the lead, the more powerful the spark the heavyer the drain, care must be taken while doing this as a battery can explode if no spark is evident then there is no power drain, if a power drain is found then you should disconect things 1 at a time until you find the sorce of the fault, dont spend any more money unles you know it will rectify the fault.

I have an Aprilia Mojito 50 2002. Won't start.

Hello. The interesting thing about these small motor cycles is that their charging system is not adequate to keep the battery fully charged. I recommend that you charge the battery fully and then start it. When the battery is totally dead, even a kick start will not start it. The charging process may also indicate that your battery needs to be replaced. If you are still using the original battery on a 2005 I would begin by having that battery tested at any auto parts store.
