Gentlemen, I have just replaced the timming belts & left head gasket, in the process things have moved. my question is how do i check to see that the timming is correct.!! Sincerely Joe marx
According to my manual to check timing remove the timing mark cap( a small circular cover with a slot cut in it,looks about the size of a quarter) rotate crankshaft until the T1 mark is lined up with the slot in the hole. This puts the #1 cylinder at Top Dead Centre. Make sure that UP mark on each camshaft pulley is near the top and the small arrow on the pulley lines up exactly with the mark on the pulley backing plate on each side.Make sure all is lined up perfectly. To make sure you can rotate the engine via the crank to make sure the valves are clearing.Check the marks again and adjust if necesary. Good Luck
You do not put on a belt unless the cam and the crank are in the correct positions. You have to be very careful not to turn the motor and bend a valve. There is a small cap on the top left side of the motor . If you take it off you will see the timing marks. To line up the 1 T F mark you will have to rotate the motor. This is done by removing the tappet cover in the center of the magneto on the back left corner of the motor . To rotate the motor insert a 17mm socket on a short breaker bar and turn. Before you move anything look at the cam gears. Each one has a dot that should line up with the arrow on the back cam cover outside most edge. When the Cam arrows and dots line up , and the 1 T F is lined up , then the engine is correctly timed (mechanically speaking). Check all the marks before you move anything , rotate gently , and do not force anything or you will be pulling a head off to start over again.
