Today, I was riding my 2000 KTM 640 after just filling it with gas. I was on the throttle fairly hard in 2nd and 3rd gear when it stalled. It almost felt as if it ran out of gas. I am now unable to restart the bike. It is getting power as the lights work. It doesn't do anything when i attempt to use the electric start. It also does not start when attempting to kick start the bike, it does however build compression. Do you have any advice?

Have you had the timing checked?

  • mdsimmon7 Nov 19, 2010

No i have not. I just had the bike in the shop for a rear tire and rear brake pads. It is unusual because it has run fine since then. I have experienced a discharged battery on the bike before, but this seems different. It sat last night and got wet slightly, but i dont expect this to be a problem as the previous owner kept it outside a lot. I am going to look at it tonight but i am not sure where to start. I have read some information about draining the fuel bowl or carburator and also checking the spark plug?

Why does my 2000 ktm 640 lc4 backfire on deceleration

A backfire is unburnt fuel igniting. Check you have no air being drawn into the engine through a split in the carb rubbers or a loose carb rubber clamp. The easiest way is to let it idle/tick over and spray some carb cleaner around the rubbers. If the engine stutters or stalls then this is where the leak is. An unsealed collector box will cause this to happen as well so check that your exhaust system is correctly sealed and fitted.

Hi,my 1997 V-Max has got either a clutch or gear problem, when it goes into v-boost in 3rd gear it slips back to 2nd gear.

The coggs between the gears are worn, no simple fix. you just cant get on it very hard. And if you do it will strip out 2nd gear. In order to remove and replace the worn out gear you have to remove the engine from the bike, take off the upper half and split the case. and if youre going to go through all this trouble you might as well rebuild the whole engine. So I had a Vmax that 2nd and 3rd gear went out on me, (my heavy right hand and all) I could still ride it. the gas mpg was bad reving 1st till about 20 mph then skipping to 4th. But hey I put over 40k with it acting this way before I sold her and purchased anouther... Enjoy your beast and she will take good care of you

2000 VW Jetta squealing when shifting from 2-3rd and hard shift down when going up hill

hi if its just second to thrid then the clutch is slipping on thrid gear look at the boxes oil level is important but look at the colour is it red and tranperant as this is ok if its brown its a sign of the clutches slipping i would try a stall test on thrid gear first and if its ok second gear [manually] see is the engine stalls at the correct rpm if you thinkabout it imagine you are in thrid gear in a manuual box and suddenly drop into second it would be hard shifting it could also be a faulty thrid gear solenoid yates210456
