Those bikes are infamous for charging problems. could have a bad reg/rectifier and fried the ecu. as for what might have caused these issue, have you ever jump started your bike from a car? also, there was a recall on the bikes for charging system. you can contact your local dealership for more info.

I have a 1985 honda shadow vt500c, and like many others before me, im in need of a cdi box, or a fix to a broken cdi box, the used ones on line are a bit pricey for my wallet.

Unfortunately, the ONLY thing you can do is replace the cdi box....what REALLY sucks is that those cdi boxes were only used by Honda for 2 years...85 & 86...all the other years/bikes had MUCH cheaper units on them...And DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT waste your time on a USED part that is 30 years old!!! There is NO WAY to test a cdi box!!! Bite the bullet & buy a NEW one if you want to fix it & forget it.....there are new ones available online from a company in the UK for about $259.00 I speak from personal experience with this EXACT issue & once you replace the cdi box, that bike will run (providing everything else is good)

Best of luck!

How do i get my bike to change gear when told to and to not jump out of gear

Nice bike, its a clutch problem, you might need to rebuild the clutch, beef it up a bit.

Can't Start 1981 Yamaha SR250

find a running sr 250 and swop his cdi unit with yours if the bike runs, fine. if not put his cdi back in and try again. if the good bike now starts it will indicate that your cdi is faulty. the cdi is located under the tank inside the frame. don't buy a second hand cdi unless you can test it on a working bike. they are very expensive and you don't want to buy a dud

Whitch wires go to the coil. Witch one of them are pos. & neg . i have a street & trail honda size 500cc

http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-xr500_model380/

Try this link, it has exploded views of all the bike in specific sections. (This link is currentley on an XR 500cc Trail bike), go to header and click <<motorcycles>> then choose your specific model and year.

Most era specific bikes will have the same wiring in and around coil/cdi etc. Most annual changes were lighting and such. In most cases, all wires exiting the crankcase go to specific same color male/female connections for the CDI and Regulator/Rectifier, with the extra wires being the coils. The earth wire will have either a screw down ring end or fit the only corresponding male or female connection. The other generally non black wire will have its corresponding connection. Hope these help, Cheers.

No pulse to coils on zzr 100

Hi
If no pulse to coils then :-
1st try checking the resistance of the pick-up (pulsar) coil
Then check for continuity between the pick-up (pulsar) coil & the CDI unit & no continuity to earth
Then check for continuity between CDI & ignition coils
If all OK, unfortunately you have to suspect the CDI unit itself, which is a very expensive item (they can be repaired by some specialist electronic firms)

Bike will not spark but gets gas

Check for 12v to coils & ignition box/ CDI/ unit. If good, Most likely CDI unit has failed. Try Ebay or salvage
