I have a 50cc keeway hurricane. It sat for 1 year without being run or started at all. I have pulled and cleaned the carburetor and all looks well. It starts up after letting the scooter sit for a while. After it warms up it wont start for a couple of minutes. If it does start up, it dies after idling fast, then slowing down pretty quickly, maybe 20-30 seconds, before finally dying and putting out. I have no idea what the cause of this symptom is. Do I have the Carburetor settings wrong? Is there a choke I am missing? Is the throttle cable incorrectly tensioned? Any help is greatly appreciated. the battery works perfectly fine, there is plenty of oil, gas is good. I dont know how to get to the spark plug(s) without taking the whole dang scooter apart though, so those may be the most suspect components.

Initially, a few possibilities you may want to check/explore:

• stale gasoline;
• clogged fuel filter (inside the tank above the fuel shutoff valve;
• clogged, bocked, varnished, gummed carbs, jets, air pin holes;
• stuffed air filter/box;
• vacuum leak (rubber coupling, manifold side);
• air leak (airbox base assembly seated/fitted on the carbs.

Both types would use fuel enrichment to make the fuel/air mixture richer for cold starts. Motorcycles deliver extra fuel to the intake through small holes in the intake bore when the choke is activated. When cleaning, use something soft like a plastic broom bristle (not metal wire) to avoid scratching the inside of the jet or passage.

if you look down from the handle bars to where your feet go you will see a little rectangle on the plastic, if you pop this off the VIN is underneath

It sounds to me that your carbs might be a little gunked up - you mentioned the gas may have been old, so it's possible that the smaller (idle) jets are slightly plugged up. Fresh fuel might do the trick and/or you could try using a fuel system cleaner and water remover. This problem might 'solve itself' with a little time.

As far as the backfire - this might be either from the carb issue or it could be related to that rattle you mentioned - you could have a loose connection at or near the head - this can **** air and cause a backfire.
