Starter relay buzzing on vstar 1100 '01 bike won't start

Did you check the neutral light, bulb?

need a clymer/haynes manual or similar--u may just hav a corroded connection or a bad relay--other makes have similar books

Sounds like a bad battery or a bad starter relay. Take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to load test the battery for you.

If the battery test good, reinstall it in the bike making sure your connections are good. Press the start switch and listen for the buzz. Look for the starter relay. It's a one inch plastic cube. When you find it, press the start button while holding the relay. Is this what is making the noise?

If all you feel out of the starter relay is a simply click, and the buzzing is coming from the starter, you're solenoid may need new contacts installed in it or your solenoid might be bad.

Initially, have the battery externally charged and checked / load tested.  The buzzing indicates that the relay is turning on & off in a continous cycle hence the buzzing sound. Possible causes could be a weak battery or a loose ground connection of the starter relay through the diodes, a faulty starter switch or a faulty starter motor.  To determine which:

• when starting again, short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay but expect a big spark;
  
• if the starter motor spins, then possibly the diodes and/or the start button switch would need checking;
  
• if the starter motor does not turn, then the starter motor would need looking into more particularly the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments.
  

Incidentally, have you tried bump starting the bike?
