I have a 1978 Suzuki GS1000. I'm trying to hook up a Vetter Windjammer fairing, CAN NOT figure out the wiring and I don't think i have the proper diagrams. PLEASE help!

  • iakona4247 Oct 16, 2010

    The colors from the bike harness do not mach in color to the windjammer harness. There is a black with a white tracer, a black, a green, and a brown coming from the bike. from the fairing there is a blue (turn signal), purple(turnsignal), a brown (accessory) and a green. if i get one turnsignal to work... the other lights but wont flash. i'm melting my brains trying to figure this out.

Do Not use the diagrams. Your turn signals have certain colored wires that go to them as well as the headlight. Make sure you run a ground wire . If the turn signal uses a separate ground keep it separate. Your Windjammer wiring harness is also color coded . Make sure the colors used for the right signals in the fairing go to the corresponding colors for the right turn signal, then the headlight, then the left turn signal , Extra power wire for a cellphone charger or radio. I have purchased 6 motorcycles with Windjammer fairings on them and had to rewire each one because the installer could not follow the instructions and do it correctly. The only thing that might make your install tricky is if the fairing harness colors do not match from one fairing quick connector to the other. Draw a diagram on a piece of paper to keep your colors straight.

    First of all , check that the vetter fairing harness wire colors and pin positions on the female connector multi-plug match the vetter motorcycle harness wire color and pin positions on the male connector muti-plug . Now look at the color of the wires of the vetter right turn signal and identify the color of the wires of the motorcycle right turn signal (probably four different wires ). Now connect the harness turn signal ground wire to the motorcycle turn signal ground wire . Connect the turn signal blinker wire to the motorcycle blinker wire (the one that makes the bulb glow brightly ) If you have turn signal running lights connect the third wire on the vetter harness to the running light wire on the motorcycle harness ( the dimmer filament of the turn signal). If your Suzuki does not have front turn signal running lights then do not hook up the dim side of the turn signal bulb wire to any thing (you only want the blinker light to work. If you want front running lights , you could tie into the tail light running light wire and run the fairing running lights from that power source(run a power wire from under the seat to the fairing). You should now have successfully hooked up your right turn signal. Use the same procedure to hook up the left side turnsignal. Warning : if your cycle has a separate ground wire for the turn signal system (a different color from all the other ground wires) use that ground for the turn signal and a different ground for the head light and accessories or your turn signals will malfunction(Honda). Most problems with vetter fairing wiring , involves improper grounding of the components.

Installing aftermarket turn signals on a Suzuki 1978 gs1000. Windjammer fairing removed so I have no wiring reference for turn signals. Need a wiring diagram, or just a simple explanation. PLEASE help....

Get a test light. Hook clip on - side of battery. Turn on turn signals and ck wires. The light will flash, that is the + wire. If turn signal has only 1 wire hook that to the + wire. The - connection will ground through frame and complete the connection.

1978 GS1000. Currently has a better - windjammer fairing. I'd like to remove the fairying and put turn signals on. I tried this once before and failed. Could not figure out the wiring. Not sure how to hook...

Pretty straight forward, each indicator on the fairing has two wires going to them, using the same two wires connect to the replacement indicators, ones is an earth wire the other is the power feed, so it's two wires for two wires. Buy bulb type indicators, LED lights have low resistance and don't flash without added resistor in the system.

I have a Yamaha Fairing (looks close to vetter but different turn signals) with a Genuine Yamaha Parts plate on it with a serial number, but do not know what it goes on, is there a way to find what model...

You may be referring to (if I remember correctly) the Califia fairings that were sold as Yamaha OEM back around 1980. If you need parts now you know where to look. Many times you can make or find adapter plates to mount a Califia fairing on a windjammer mounts , etc. The fairing will fit on any motorcycle you just have to adapt the mounts to fit and wire it to your harness.

1978 Suzuki GS 1000, need manual would like to download it, anyone have anything free

The best I can offer is a 1980 GS1000. Ninety eight percent of the 1980 manual applies to your 1978 bike. The biggest differences are in fenders, gas tank, decals, trim and seat designs. Go to the site below for a free download. www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp

Wiring from "Windjammer Fairing to Bike is troublesome....

Hi and welcome to the site,

To my recollection, wiring of a Windjammer:
  • white - high;
  • yellow - low;
  • black - ground;
  • violet - left;
  • blue - right;
  • green - running light;
  • red - cigarette lighter;
  • brown - accessory;
  • orange - accessory.
While the Suzuki would have:
  • yellow - high;
  • white - low;
  • black/white - ground;
  • black - left;
  • green - right;

Good luck and thank you for asking.
