How to Test Engine CompressionAn engine depends on an equal compression reading in each cylinder to run smoothly. If poor compression exits in one or more cylinders it can cause a rough idle condition and low power. A compression test can be performed to check wear or internal damage. To start a engine compression test gauge is needed. There are two types of gauge styles, one threads into the spark plug hole which is more accurate. The other style of gauge is constructed with a rubber plug that is meant to be pressed against the spark plug hole, this style of gauge is difficult to use. To perform a engine cylinder compression test follow the steps below.

  • Remove ignition coil connector or ignition system fuse to disable power to the ignition system
  • Test ignition system to ensure that the power to the system has been disabled
  • Remove #1 cylinder spark plug and insert compression gauge, most gauges have a hose attachment that is installed into the spark plug hole with the gauge connecting to the gauge hose.

  • After the compression gauge has been inserted, use the starter to crank the engine over for about five seconds. Use about the same five seconds to test the remaining cylinders.
  • Record the compression reading as each cylinder is tested
  • Remove the compression gauge and reinsert the spark plug
  • Follow this procedure until all cylinders have been tested
  • Compare cylinders compression reading, all readings should be within about 5% of each other
If low compression exists a cylinder malfunction exits and further inspection is required. Possible causes for a low compression condition are: burned intake or exhaust valve, broken piston or piston ring, broken valve spring or a blown head gasket.

Loss of compression while driving at speeds of 75-80 mph causing the rpm to go down while accelerating. What could this be.. Just got new heads done on engine.

Insufficient compression in the cylinders due to leaks and the engine will not start. To begin with run a compression check on all cylinders and then any cylinder with compression not at spec run a leak down test to see where the compression loss is going.

You are describing the classic symptoms of a blown head gasket from the cylinder into the water jacket. This causes loss of compression in the affected cylinder and also injects hot gases into the cooling jacket resulting in overpressure and overheating of the coolant. Perform a compression check of all cylinders and if any are appreciably lower than the others, you are looking at some major engine work.

You'll need to pull the code from the computer to find what cylinder it is. It could be simple as replacing the spark plug (check it for damage) or the ignition coil. If the spark plug doesn't fix it, try moving the ignition coil to a different cylinder to see if the misfire follows that coil. If it does, replace the coil. If it does not, do a compression test as you may have dropped a valve or lost compression rings in that cylinder. Since there is raw fuel dumping into the exhaust there is the risk of fire from the catalytic converter.

If overheated bad enough to blow a head gasket then the compression is leaking into the cooling system. there is not enough pressure left for heat expansion to keep the gas burning. check engine compression if low due a pressure volume loss test.

Overheated and loss compression.

The most common cause is a blown head gasket and sometimes a warped head. Someone would need to remove the cylinder head and have it checked for damage, then replace the head gasket.

Coolant loss no leak

hi.

Check compression. If the leak is internal, then the most common cause is the head gasket. Water (or coolant) leaks internally through the worn head gasket reaching the cylinders where it gets vaporized. Symptoms are coolant fluid level going down, bad performance, loss of compression, overheating, white smoke because of vaporized coolant from exhaust, traces of fuel in coolant reservoir etc.

If head gasket is Ok and there is no overheating, then the leak is external. Check pump, radiator and coolant lines.

There isn't much you could have done incorrectly by changing the radiator to cause the problems you have now. Therefore, I'm guessing that you badly overheated the engine. When that happens, engine seals become brittle and loose their ability to seal which results in oil leaks. High temperatures can cause the compression rings on the pistons to relax, in which case you are now loosing compression which not only causes performance loss but will also pressurize the inside of the engine and cause leaks.. Extreme heating can also allow your timing chain to stretch a bit, also causing performance problems.
If you have already checked the condition of the ignition system to make sure there is no arcing and spark loss, I'd do a compression and or cylinder leak-down test to check the internal condition of the engine.
If everything turns out to be OK inside, then treat this like any other performance problem and test all sensors, run a code test and make sure the air filter is clean and the converter is flowing well. As for oil leaks, Replace seals or gaskets that are leaking.

Over heat

If the head gasket goes water is allowed to seep into the cylinders and then out of the exhaust.

Once the level has dropped enough the car overheats

Or the water is pressurised in the radiator from the compression of the engine and it is forced out of the overflow leading to coolant loss and overheating
