Hi to check this out the best way would be to, follow the pipe from the bottom of each bottle, if it goes back to the radiator, then you can be sure it is the coolant bottle, the pipe on top of the bottle will hang down to alow expanding water or airout

Connection from coolant recovery tank to hose on 2008 Pontiac Torrent Please. Trying to drain recovery tank.

Hello Georgiann Dockery and welcome to ""FIXYA""...

Not knowing PRECISELY what a 2008 TORRENT
recovery bottle looks like... I cheated and used
he ROCKAUTO website to see SEVERAL iterations
( abundant: very popular ( not a good OMEN )).

(((Parts USUALY popular when they're FRAIL))).

Of what the market depicts as YOUR BOTTLE
(see here):
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/pontiac,2008,torrent,3.4l+v6,1441011,cooling+system,coolant+recovery+tank,10457

I would vigorously recommend NOT trying to
disconnect the "hose" (drain) from EITHER
side of that PLASTIC bottle...

There are so MANY replacement options... the
only logical conclusion is that it BREAKS like
a Christmas Tree Ornament...

Disconnect from the PRESSURE CAP side
and lower THAT end until your bottle empties.

FOR serious heating/cooling issues...
Your "expansion" bottle is FAIRLY
MEANINGLESS.. Please do not hesitate to
bring your SYMPTOMS here...

I am sure you will get some SERIOUS support.

Cold pressure testing your system ... like:
https://www.amazon.com/Stant-12270-Cooling-System-Pressure/dp/B0002SRGWU/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1547174804&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=stant+cold+pressure

is an EXCELLENT place to start...

QUICKLY finds... blown gaskets, loose hoses, seals,
soft plugs... defective hoses... radiator/core failures...
(etc.) is a cold quiet (engine off) circumstance.

I can recommend no finer beginning to trouble-
shoot heating/cooling issues (cheap & easy).

Hope this helps.

All of a suddent the coolant bottle ran out and the car over headed I had to shut it down and found the bottle was empty.. any reasons why it would do that?

start simple , fill bottle and look for a leak in the bottom of bottle, bottle may have crack ,it won't empty on its own unless theres a leak some where. look under vehicle and try to spot leaks , look around hose connections.

I have a 1997 buick skylark and my low coolant light is on so i bought a gallon of the local advance autos 50 50 and filled the resevor let the car run 5 min with cap off level stayed the same am i doing...

Are you sure the coolant is still low in the bottle. The coolant sensor thats in the bottle has a float that can stick. If it sticks the low coolant light will stay on even if the coolant level is right. Try tapping on the coolant reservoir bottle in the area where the electrical wire enters it. Not too hard. If that is the porblem the light should reset.
