Use 10w40 in the gearbox. Get the oil from your Yamaha dealer along with any filter your bike may need. Some bikes use an oil change as the "filter". To drain oil, get the engine warmed up and turn it off. Put a pan under the gearbox and remove the oil drain plug. Replace the oil plug when the flow becomes a slow drip. Change oil in late spring, the middle of summer and in early fall. Remember to lube the chain and adjust it when needed. Lubricate the cables with liquid graphite. Lastly, install a stock spark plug. Now go for a ride.

The filter is under a cover plate just forward of the clutch and towards the top of the gearbox. With filter change, the bike takes 1.16 quarts of 10w40 motor oil. ( 1.1 liter ).

Use the weight your manual suggests. As long as it does not say EC (energy conserving) on the label it will be fine. Pay attention to your expected temperature, the weight of oil suggested changes based on your local temperatures.

I believe the engine and transmission are shared, using the same oil.
You should have a sight glass on the left side, and it should be checked after a warm up, and then sit for a couple of minutes. I think it's close to a quart and a half.

With the nasty noises and no oil pressure I think the engine may have trashed the crankshaft bearings and probably the connecting rod. If this has been going on for very long, the crankshaft may be trashed also. Take it to a dealer and let them listen to it for confirmation.
